The Detroit Tigers have signed left-hander Devin Smeltzer to a minor-league deal.

Minnesota needed to clear a roster spot for Chris Archer and Smeltzer was the casualty. The Twins don't need a fifth starter until August anyway and Smeltzer has struggled since the beginning of June, so there was every reason to give him a breather. Absent the Twins making a deal, expect him back with the team by mid-August.
