The Diamondbacks are expected to place RP Joakim Soria (calf) on the 10-day IL.
Fantasy Impact
USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting that Arizona is calling up Matthew Peacock to replace Soria. Chris Devenski, Kevin Ginkel, and Stefan Crichton are candidates to save games during his absence.
Diamondbacks RHP Joakim Soria strained his left calf while covering first base during Sunday's game against the Padres.
Fantasy Impact
Soria was replaced by Kevin Ginkel in the eighth inning after straining his left calf while covering first base. He will return to Phoenix Monday for further evaluation. Soria is considered day-to-day. Kevin Ginkel and Chris Devenski will handle closing duties while Soria is sidelined.
Torey Luvullo told reporters on Sunday that he doesn't see the Diamondbacks having a slam-dunk closer right now and he's likely to favor a by-committee approach late in games.
Fantasy Impact
Most fantasy managers expected Joakim Soria to hold down the ninth-inning role, but Lovullo apparently sees things differently. Closer-by-committee is often what a manager says, but rarely what he does, and Lovullo has never favored the approach before. Still plan on Soria receiving the majority of the save chances, but keep your eye on Stefan Crichton, Kevin Ginkel, and Taylor Clarke, just in case.
Relief pitcher Joakim Soria has agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Fantasy Impact
The closer role is still wide open for the Diamondbacks, so Soria has a chance to step into that role after posting a 2.82 ERA with 24 strikeouts across 22 1/3 innings with Oakland in last year's shortened season. Soria had initially been linked with the Mariners, but the competition for the closer role is a little less crowded down in Arizona.
Free agent reliever Joakim Soria has been drawing interest from 4/5 of the AL West, including the A's, Angels, Astros, and Rangers, according to Jon Morosi.
Fantasy Impact
Soria is getting up there in age, he'll turn 37 in May, but he's still got some gas left in the tank. He was very effective out of the bullpen for the A's last season. He registered a 2.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 24 strikeouts over 22 1/3 innings. He would make for a good fit with any of the interested clubs.
