Kevin Slowey making a case for the Phillies 5th spot in the rotatation

Kevin Slowey continued his hot start to Spring Training on Sunday, throwing 3 perfect innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. That makes it 5 innings of work this Spring for Slowey, surrendering just 1 base knock to this point.

Fantasy Impact

Someone is going to win the Phillies 5th starter spot. With Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez off to a less than stellar start and Aaron Harang two starts behind him, Slowey looks to be in the drivers seat as a non-roster invitee. When combined with the possibility of Cliff Lee being forced to miss time, Slowey may be able to sneak into the rotation even with a stellar Spring from Harang or Gonzalez. In N.L. only leagues, Slowey may have some sneaky sleeper value right now if he can continue his early success.

Kevin Slowey earns win over Yankees

Kevin Slowey, who pitched in just 17 Major League games last year, started and threw two scoreless in the Phillies' 3-1 win over the New York Yankees. Slowey earned the win, striking out two and not allowing a hit. Of the 30 pitches he threw, 20 were for strikes.

Fantasy Impact

Slowey, who was signed by the Phillies this past off season, has pitched for the Twins and Marlins in his seven-year career. He was 1-1 with a 5.30 ERA in 37 1/3 innings last season. Slowey could land a spot on the roster as a long reliever, spot starter or fifth starter.

Phillies sign Slowey to minor league contract

The Phillies signed veteran pitcher Kevin Slowey to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Slowey, who has a career ERA of 4.62, has allowed only 1.5 walks per nine innings. On the downside, he's allowed 10.4 hits per nine innings. With the Phillies lacking in starting pitching depth, Slowey could make a push at a spot in the rotation.

Fantasy Impact

Slowey won 12 games with the Twins in 2008 and 13 in 2010, but he's only won 18 games over parts of five other Major League seasons. Although inconsistent, if Slowey makes the Phillies roster as a starter, he would be a solid extra pitcher to draft in the late round of deep leagues or as a post draft pickup.
