Reserve infielder Matt Duffy has signed a contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Nippon Professional Baseball League.
Fantasy Impact
Duffy had just three plate appearances in 2016, all coming in April with the Houston Astros.
Matt Duffy was optioned to Triple-A after the Monday to make room for Evan Gattis on the 25-man roster.
Fantasy Impact
Matt Duffy joined the Triple-A affiliate Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday after being optioned by the Astros. Duffy had not received much playing time during his tenure on the Astros so he was the odd man out when Evan Gattis had completed his stint on the disabled list. If you had Duffy on your roster, you can go ahead and drop him.
Matt Duffy had one at bat Thursday resulting in a strikeout.
Fantasy Impact
The versatile Matt Duffy should continue to see at bats for the Astros due to his defensive vesatility. While his season debut did not result in anything positive, he does have have hidden power which he will eventually show. Duffy hit 20 homeruns for the Triple-A champion Fresno Grizzlies last season so do not completely write him off. He is not worth a spot on your fantasy roster yet, but keep an eye on him.
The Astros are leaning toward carrying 12 pitchers, and if that sticks, Matt Duffy is in line to be the 25th man on opening day — the same role he had the last time he was at Yankee Stadium, as part of the team that won the wild card game against the Yankees in October.
Fantasy Impact
The Astros are finalizing their 25-man roster and Matt Duffy appears to be in line to make the cut. While Duffy has not had a stellar spring training, tallying 16 K's, he has hit three HR. Duffy should not be on your draft radar at this time.
Matt Duffy went 1-for-3 with a two-run single, a strikeout, and a stolen base against the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Fantasy Impact
Duffy is well on his way to earning a roster spot, even if it is a backup/utility one to start with, as he's shown skill at every facet of his position. Duffy pulled off two excellent double plays, and a great catch at 3B, swiped a bag with two outs, and knocked in a pair of runs early in the game. He is not draftable except in deep keeper or AL-Only leagues, but monitoring Duffy's progress (and playing time) is in your best interest.
