The New York Mets have traded right-hander Michael Tonkin to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations.

The 34-year-old was recently designated for assignment and will quickly find a new home in Minnesota. Tonkin worked to a 4.50 ERA in four innings this season and posted a 4.28 ERA across 45 outings and 80 innings with the Braves in the 2023 campaign.

While the Twins lost their first game in 2017 this afternoon to the White Sox, Michael Tonkin looked good in his season debut. Tonkin entered the game in the sixth inning and worked a clean outing, finishing off the last eight outs for the Twins.

For now, Tonkin is not in a high leverage role for the Twins. Tonkin was a closer for much of his minor league career and despite a less than stellar 2016, he did have a 10.05 K/9. If he can continue to pitch like he did today there is reason for optimism as the Twins bullpen roles outside of Brandon Kintzler as a closer are malleable.

With the shoulder injury to Casey Fien Wednesday, the Twins have called up Tonkin to fill the temporary void. He had brief stints with the Twins in 2013 and 2014, but his minor-league numbers are much better this year than in past seasons. That being said, don't be surprised if he's back with Rochester in a few weeks.
