Mike Olt signs with Red Sox

Mike Olt returned to New England, where he went to high school, signing a minor league contract with the Red Sox. He did not play in the major leagues in 2016 and only had 79 at-bats with the White Sox in 2015. Olt has a .580 OPS in 352 career at-bats.

Fantasy Impact

Olt had 58 home runs in 2011 and 2012, posting a .954 OPS between Double-A Frisco and the Dominican League in 2012. He was traded to the Cubs in the Matt Garza trade in 2013, but never made an impact with Chicago. The Red Sox will use him for minor league depth, but the 28-year-old could regain his power stroke.

Mike Olt hits first Home Run in White Sox uniform

Mike Olt bashed his first home run since joining the White Sox. Olt finished the night 1-for-4, as the White Sox beat the Athletics 9-4.

Fantasy Impact

Mike Olt has flashed his power potential in his brief stints with the Cubs and White Sox. The major questions have always been, can he make enough contact, cut down on his strike out rate and remain healthly. If Olt can remain healthly, he could make for a intriguing late round pick.

Mike Olt showing off power and patience at the plate

Mike Olt crushed his second homerun of the spring in Monday's Cactus League loss against the Padres.

Fantasy Impact

People knew that Mike Olt had power coming into the spring, but his patience at the plate has been questioned in the past and he has shut the doubters up so far. His at-bats are longer and he’s showed great patience, shown by taking a tough walk in the at-bat after hitting a home run. His 3 walks to 1 strikeout may be his most impressive statistic so far this spring.

Mike Olt starts the spring off right

Mike Olt took left-hander Barry Zito deep for a two-run homer in his first at bat in Thursday's Cactus League tie against the Athletics.

Fantasy Impact

Olt showed power for the Cubs last season, hitting 12 homers in 258 at bats, but he hit only .160/.248/.356 overall. Many consider this to be Mike Olt's last chance to play in a Chicago Cubs uniform. He has Kris Bryant creeping up behind him in the depth chart and needs to have a dominate spring to turn some heads. The 26-year-old has said his time in the minors changed him for the better last year, if this is true there is no reason not to think that Olt can play 3B this year and push Kris Bryant to start his career playing in LF.

Cubs trade Luis Valbuena

The Chicago Cubs have traded infielder Luis Valbuena and pitcher Dan Straily to the Astros for outfielder Dexter Fowler. Valbuena was projected to be the starting third base man for the Cubs.

Fantasy Impact

The trade of Valbuena opens up a spot at third for mega prospect Kris Bryant, the third base man of the Cubs future. The Cubs will most likely leave Bryant in the minor leagues at the start of the season, to gain more control over Bryant's future contracts. Mike Olt is the most likely candidate to start the season at third base for the Cubs. Olt was the Cubs' starting thid baseman for Opening Day in 2014. He hit 12 home runs in 258 plate appearances, but struggled with 100 strikeouts and a .160 batting average in his 89 games in the majors last season. Olt could be a good source of power in fantasy, for at least the first month of the season that is.
