Ryne Nelson is scheduled to undergo an MRI on July 17 to evaluate the progress of his elbow recovery.

Nelson was placed on the injured list June 19 with a right UCL sprain after experiencing elbow discomfort while throwing a pitch during his June 16 outing. He has been shut down since, and the Diamondbacks are expected to provide an update on his recovery plan once they receive his MRI results.

Nelson started off well, facing one batter over the minimum in the first two innings. The righthander allowed a single run in the third, but then was tagged for six runs in the fourth as the Marlins blew the game open. Five of the six runs came on a pair of homers - a two-run shot by Owen Caissie and a three-run blast by Kyle Stowers. Nelson entered Wednesday's contest having pitched to a 2.89 ERA over his previous seven starts. However, he has struck out three batters or fewer in five consecutive outings. He'll take a 2-5 record and a 5.19 ERA into his next start against the Angels on Monday.
