Statcast has a metric used as a method to determine a player's luck. called xwOBA-wOBA. Miguel Cabrera had his worst season ever, but it wasn't because he is "done". Rather, he continued to crush the ball. Sure, he took a step backward, but please consider that his xwOBA-wOBA was a whopping 0.060. Second through 4th place were all between 0.032 and 0.036, so his lack of luck was unprecedented. Sure, the metric isn't perfect because it doesn't account for shifts or speed, but with that sort of distinction between first and second, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize he is due for significant positive regression.

Miguel Cabrera is looking like his old self once again

Lynn Henning is reporting that Miguel Cabrera is looking like his old self in camp and acting like it, too. Lynn is taking it a step further and could see Cabrera get close to winning his second Triple Crown this season at the age of 35. Cabrera played last season with two herniated discs in his back, while putting up a .249 batting average in 130 games played. In addition, he had 16 home runs and 60 RBI in 2017. Cabrera elected to not have surgery during the off-season to address his back issue. He goes through a daily routine that includes specific stretches for his back and all signs are pointing to him being in great shape.

Fantasy Impact

It is exciting to hear that Cabrera is looking and acting like his old self in camp. If one of the younger bats in the lineup or someone like a Nick Castellanos can help take some pressure off of Cabrera, we could see him getting back to the level of performance we expect out of the star infielder. He is currently being drafted near the eighth round in mock drafts and is worth taking a round or two earlier.
