JR Smith turns down $1.6 million contract from Jiangsu Dragons

According to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando, JR Smith has turned down a $1.6 million contract offer from the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Fantasy Impact

After publicly accusing the Cleveland Cavaliers front office of tanking, Smith spent the remainder of the 2018-2019 season away from the team. Smith was subsequently waived in July. While Smith will be turning 34 next week, he still offers scoring ability that could especially benefit a team’s second unit. The dismissal of Jiangsu’s contract offer may signal confidence that other NBA suitors will come calling as the season nears.

JR Smith waived by Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers have waived guard JR Smith after failing to reach a buyout or find a willing trade partner.

Fantasy Impact

Smith will be a free agent after spending five years with the Cavaliers. While many might suspect he would join the Lakers, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that's "unlikely". At this point in his career Smith won't play a huge role with whatever team he ends up on leaving him with limited fantasy value.

JR Smith may not reach buyout with Cavs

The Cavs are not expected to pursue a buyout agreement with G JR Smith. Smith is owed a ridiculous $30 million next season. The team will look to trade him in June as he would only be guaranteed $3.9 million at that point.

Fantasy Impact

Smith is out for the season then if the team is unable to reach an agreement on a buyout so he can join a contender. The Rockets would've been a decent fit but he won't be leaving Cleveland at this point.

JR Smith set to be traded or waived by Cavaliers

JR Smith will no longer be in the active lineup for games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Joe Vardon. Since the report, Smith not played either game (two in total) and will not play on Saturday. Rodney Hood is now starting at the two.

Fantasy Impact

With Smith as good as gone, Rodney Hood is the next man up and should be added in all leagues as the defacto top scoring option in Cleveland with Kevin Love out. Jordan Clarkson gets a boost in minutes but Hood and David Nwaba should be owned in fantasy. Cedi Osman gets a boost also.
