Sam Shields expected to be released by Packers

by Mike Maher | Wed, Jan 18th 7:40am EST

Sam Shields is expected to be released by the Green Bay Packers, according to ESPN NFL Nation Packers reporter Rob Demovsky. Shields missed most of the season after a Week 1 concussion landed him on injured reserve, and while cornerback is one of Green Bay's bigger needs heading into the offseason, they seem interested in moving on from Shields and his contract. Fantasy Impact:

Not only did Shields miss most of the season, but he was recently charged with drug and paraphernalia possession stemming from an arrest in October. Shields has a cap hit of $12,125,000 next season, and the Packers can save $9,000,000 of that by releasing him. Shields has given no indication that he is considering retirement after a serious concussion, though that is certainly a possibility at this point.
