A.J. Hawk

Hawk’s time in Green Bay may be nearing its end

by Brad Behrens | Fri, Feb 6th 10:53am EST

While A.J. Hawk has been a solid contributor to the Green Bay defense throughout his 9 year career, his role began to slowly decline this season. Even though he was third on the team in total tackles in 2014, Hawk only played 18 out of a possible 73 defensive snaps in the NFC Championship Game. If the Packers do decide to move on, they could save close to $7 million in cap space by cutting Hawk and fellow ILB Brad Jones (who played 0 defensive snaps in the NFC Championship Game). Both Hawk and Jones are currently under contract for next season. (Fox Sports)

Fantasy Impact:

With the likely departures of Hawk and Jones, the Packers will need to add depth at linebacker and would love to add a playmaker to pair with Sam Barrington in 2015. While GM Ted Thompson has typically turned to the draft in these situations, he has also shown willingness to dip into the free agent market if the player and price are right. With the signing of Julius Peppers fresh in everyone’s mind, the Packers have been speculatively linked with free agent linebackers like David Harris, Rolando McClain and Brandon Spikes. It will be interesting to see how the Packers approach the situation this offseason.
