Seahawks to pursue Packers' Tramon Williams

by Brad Behrens | Fri, Mar 6th 12:18pm EST

After rejecting an initial two-year, $8 million offer to return to the Packers next season, CB Tramon Williams looks destined to become a free agent. The Seattle Seahawks have made it clear that, if Williams does become a free agent, they would love to have him anchor their defensive backfield opposite Richard Sherman. Seattle seems resigned to losing CB Byron Maxwell, who will most likely be the hottest free agent cornerback, and the Seahawks' GM John Schneider has a history with Williams, as he signed him to the Packers practice squad in 2006. Schneider also likes Williams' proven ability to play both bump-and-run and off-coverage and believes he would be a great if in Pete Carroll’s aggressive Cover 3 scheme. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

Fantasy Impact:

For Seattle, the addition of Williams would be greatly welcomed. Assuming they lose Maxwell to free agency, the Seahawks will need to add depth at cornerback due to serious late season injuries to their nickel back Jeremy Lane and 4th cornerback Tharold Simon. For Green Bay, the loss of Williams would leave their cornerback depth chart fairly thin. Davon House and Jarret Bush are on the verge of becoming free agents as well, leaving Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde, Demetri Goodson and Tay Glover-Wright as the only conerbacks left on the roster. In the modern NFL, where proven conerbacks are valuable assets, it seems like this move would fill a huge roster hole for Seattle while creating one for Green Bay.
