The Dolphins have released punter Brandon Fields. Undrafted rookie free agent, Matt Darr, is the new starter. Last season Fields was the second highest paid punter in the league. He took a pay cut to help the team free up salary cap space. However, while the rookie from Tennessee cost even less, having a longer gross and net average than Fields in camp and preseason games likely made a difference too.
Fantasy Impact
Even with the pay cut, Fields was going to earn over $3 million this season. We'll find out by Saturday if the Dolphins start anew at kicker as well or keep Caleb Sturgis.
The Dolphins wanted Fields to take a pay cut to help the team free up salary cap space, and was willing to release him if he didn't. He did, he stays.
Fantasy Impact
Before the re-do, Fields was the second highest paid punter in the league, ranking 11th best in punt average (46.3), and 25th in net average (38.6 yards). His longest punt of the season was 60 yards (30th).
With the Dolphins set to make Ndamukong Suh the highest paid player in the NFL, the team needs to keep clearing cap space. Miami is expected to release Fields unless he restructures his contract. His release would free up another $3.1 million.
