Penei Sewell (ankle) could miss Week 5 as Lions prepare to be without him

Per Detroit beat writer Dave Birkett, the Lions are planning to be without rookie OT Penei Sewell (ankle) on Sunday vs the Vikings.

Fantasy Impact

Sewell's absence would be a huge hit to the already hurting Detroit offensive line which is also expected to be missing C Frank Ragnow and RT Taylor Decker. While Detroit OC Anthony Lynn is holding out hope Sewell could play it seems like a long shot at this point. With Detroit being without three of their five starting offensive linemen expect Jared Goff to be running around more than usual and some potential struggles in the rushing department for Detroit as Sewell's absence will have an impact across the entire offense.

Penei Sewell agrees to terms on four-year, $24.1M deal with the Lions

Detroit Lions OT Penei Sewell has reportedly agreed to terms with the team on his four-year, $24.1M fully guaranteed contract. This includes a $14.88M signing bonus.

Fantasy Impact

Sewell lands in Dan Campbell's smash-mouth regime to begin his career. The 20-year old tackle out of the University of Oregon will be a great asset for Jared Goff and De'Andre Swift, as he allowed just one sack across his last two seasons in college and has shown smooth run-blocking ability, opening up running lanes for the backfield to seize upon. Sewell is an extremely young prospect but has incredible strength and balance, which will allow him to hold his ground as the Lions' starting right tackle come September.

Fantasy Impact

Sewell was drafted number seven overall by the Detroit Lions. He is widely regarded as the best OL prospect. Sewell will have to quarantine until he is cleared. He will likely miss mini-camp, but will head to Detroit as soon as he's cleared.

Penei Sewell selected No. 7 by Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have selected offensive tackle Penei Sewell with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Impact

Sewell is the highest-ranked offensive tackle in this draft. It was suspected that he could have been taken at No. 5 by the Bengals or No. 6 by the Dolphins and the Lions were quick to lock him in as soon as they were on the clock. The Oregon product is just 20 years old and measures in at 6'6" and 331 pounds. He'll add to the physicality that new coach Dan Campbell is hoping to develop as well as boost the value of their second-year back, D'Andre Swift.

Penei Sewell a possible target for Miami Dolphins at No. 6 overall

Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reports Oregon OL Penei Sewell is a possibility for the Miami Dolphins with the No. 6 overall pick.

Fantasy Impact

Earlier today the Dolphins traded away Ereck Flowers, which could be a sign they anticipate adding some O-line depth in the draft. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll come with the 6th overall pick. The Dolphins' offensive line struggled in 2020, so adding Sewell would certainly help protect Tua Tagovailoa.
