49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated that he does not believe rookie quarterback Trey Lance will outperform the incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo prior to Week 1. As such, Shanahan currently has no intention of giving Lance first-team reps.
Lance, who was taken by the 49ers after they traded up to the No. 3 selection, impressed at North Dakota State but opted out of the 2020 season. He recently signed his rookie deal with San Francisco and is expected to be their franchise quarterback. However, the Niners clearly plan on taking things slow and don't expect to rush Lance into action. He ranks 26th among quarterbacks in the latest expert consensus draft rankings and 11th in the latest dynasty rankings.
Trey Lance was given designed running plays in 49ers practice on Saturday.
Part of what makes Lance so intriguing as a prospect is his dual threat ability that he offers which Jimmy Garoppolo does not. Lance ran for 1,100 yards on the ground in his lone full collegiate season. This will be an interesting development to continue to monitor as training camp progresses
The 49ers and quarterback Trey Lance have officially agreed to a four-year, $34.1 million rookie contract that is fully guaranteed. The deal includes an option for a fifth season.
Lance, a client of CAA Football, was the second-to-last first-round pick who remained unsigned. Now, after today's update from Santa Clara, No. 2 pick Zach Wilson is the only first-rounder who hasn't struck a deal. Lance, who was taken by the 49ers after they traded up to the No. 3 selection, impressed at North Dakota State but opted out of the 2020 season. It’s likely the 49ers are waiting for the Jets to sign No. 2 overall Zach Wilson before they sign No. 3 overall Trey Lance. No one knows who will start Week 1, whether it be Jimmy Garoppolo or Lance himself, but we do know there will be a heated battle between the two starting at training camp. Regardless of who starts Week 1, unless Garoppolo sets the world on fire and the 49ers are winning, it’s likely Lance will get his turn to show San Francisco what they have him.
The San Francisco 49ers have selected quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
It was reported that the 49ers were torn between Lance and Mac Jones, but they'll opt for the bigger and more athletic of the two. Lance will hope to fit in Kyle Shanahan's well as a strong and big-armed quarterback with the ability to run the ball and move the pocket. The North Dakota State product measures in at 6'4" and 226 pounds. He was only able to play in one game in 2020 before his school shut down the football program due to COVID-19 concerns. There's speculation that he will sit early in his career to help with his development, but fantasy managers should be excited about his rushing upside once he gets his opportunity as a starter.
