Trey Lance underwent a second surgery on his right ankle to remove hardware that was inserted during the first surgery. He is expected to be fine for OTAs.
Lance experienced irritation based on the location of the hardware. It is looking like it'll be another offseason with quarterback controversy for the 49ers, especially if Brock Purdy leads San Francisco far in the playoffs.
The 49ers placed Trey Lance on the Injured Reserve list on Wednesday.
Lance underwent successful surgery on his fractured ankle earlier in the week. He will now begin to rehab in hopes of making a full recovery ahead of the start of next season.

Lance will now begin the rehabilitation process as he works his way back from a fibula fracture and ligament disruption. Head team physician Dr. Tim McAdams is confident Lance will recover in time for a full return in 2023.

Terrible news for Lance and the 49ers. Lance was in just his second start as the clear-cut starter when he was carted off after a short run up the middle against the Seahawks. Lance’s focus will now shift to rehab and being ready for 2023.

Lance was carted off the field with his right leg in an air case and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately it seems that the ankle injury is significant enough to end his season. A silver lining for the 49ers, is they were able to work out a new contract to keep Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco as the backup. Fantasy managers should expect Garoppolo to take over for the starting job for the remainder of the season.
