TE - NE
Smith's talent was not put on display nearly enough with the Titans, as he never saw more than 65 targets in a single season. Despite that, he finished as a top-12 tight end in 2020. The Patriots were aggressive with him, signing him the first day of free agency to a four-year, $50 million deal, which tells us all we need to know: They aren't going to hide him. The signing of Hunter Henry hurt his projection a bit, but the drafting of Mac Jones improved it a bit because once he takes over as the starter, this team will throw a lot more. Once you get outside the top five tight ends, you're chasing upside, and Smith has plenty of it.
Smith will be a nice addition to the New England offense, but he is going to have a hard time being a TE1 competing with Hunter Henry for tight end targets. He is more of a TE2 in fantasy.
Jonnu lands in New England, and then they also get Hunter Henry. I don't think either guy will be a top-10 fantasy TE in 2021.
Love the real-life fit w/ Pats alongside Henry
in their recreation of Gronk & Hernandez - lite... but the fantasy results could be sketchy, at least if Cam remains the QB
could very well decide to move on from Tennessee, who utilized him more as a blocker this past season
Jonnu Smith started 2020 on fire but ultimately fizzled on the back of a lack of targets, injury and the emergence of Anthony Firkser. Now a free agent, Smith will need to lower his salary expectations to return to the Titans, as they're a little tight on the projected cap. A move could help him but for me, Smith will likely remain in Tennessee and be on the cusp of TE1 value moving forward.
