ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that the Patriots are reportedly signing free-agent TE Jonnu Smith to a 4-year, $50M contract.
This is a great landing for Smith from a fantasy standpoint. The Patriots have one of the weakest WR cores in the league, and Smith's athleticism makes him a matchup nightmare. The recently re-signed Cam Newton has shown a tendency to favor the TE in the past (Greg Olsen), and at this time, Smith is the number one option on that offense. He should be locked in as a TE1 for the 2021 season. The deal reportedly will include $31.25M fully guaranteed.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Titans are not tagging TE Jonnu Smith.
Smith is set to hit the free agency market. Smith caught 41 passes for 448 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 2020. If he goes to a team who will fully utilize him, he might finally break out. Stay tuned to see where he lands.
Titans GM Jon Robinson made it clear in a video conference Tuesday that TE Jonnu Smith could land with a different team this offseason as his rookie deal comes to an end.
Smith, originally a third-round pick in 2017, has missed just four games in his four-year career with the Titans, totaling 1,302 yards and 16 touchdowns on 114 receptions. Smith could very well decide to move on from Tennessee, who utilized him more as a blocker this past season. Robinson told reporters he completely understands the nature of the business, and made it sound like the team is preparing to be without Smith come the 2021 season. Smith’s departure would open up playing time for both Anthony Firkser and MyCole Pruitt, or the Titans could opt to select a tight end in the upcoming draft.
Jonnu Smith caught two of three targets for nine yards in a playoff matchup on Sunday as the Titans lost to the Ravens by a 20-13 score.
Smith finishes off an inconsistent season for the Titans. The 25-year-old tight end looked like a breakout candidate but had up and down performances and finished the regular season with 41 receptions.
Jonnu Smith caught 1-of-2 targets for eight yards in the Titans' Week 17 win over the Texans by a 41-38 score.
Smith was on everyone's breakout lists going into the season as he had the top spot on the tight end depth chart. Smith had an up and down year and finishes the regular season with 41 catches, 448 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns.
