I think people don't realize how good of a pick Ronald Jones is because of what happened last season. As a 21-year-old last season he entered the NFL as a second round pick into a backfield that looked like it was all his. Because of that, there are reports that he didn't exactly put in maximum effort into his training and his health. So, during camp we all heard the reports that Barber was somehow winning the job. Jones proceeded to get 23 total carries…for 44 pathetic yards and a single TD. But here's the thing, he was an out of shape 21-year-old behind a terrible offensive line. In fact, he was hit at or behind the line of scrimmage on 13 of those 23 carries. Barber proceeded to take his 234 carries for just 871 yards…which is a garbage 3.7 YPC. He also gained just 92 yards on his 20 receptions. That's an embarrassing 4.6 YPR. So, what did the Bucs do in the draft and FA after that terrible season for the RB's? Nothing. They didn't draft any competition. The only back they brought in Andre Ellington in FA. This is now Jones backfield to lose, and all reports from camp have been positive in that regards. Getting him at the very end of the 8th round is a steal. The Bucs are going to score points this season. And as long as they don't trade for Duke Johnson, then Ronald Jones is going to be a great pick for where he's going.

The Bucs told us all we needed to know in the draft and free agency - they don't feel like they need to add another running back. No one is suggesting they're confident Jones will tear the league up, but you should be confident that he's the starter in Bruce Arians' offense, which has historically netted great results. Peyton Barber isn't the long-term answer, so look for them to find out if Jones is, which requires more than the 30 touches he got as a rookie.
