New Jersey Devils

Will Butcher and the New Jersey Devils avoided arbitration as they came to terms on a three-year contract worth $3.73 million. (Source: Elliotte Friedman on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: After an excellent rookie season that produced 44 points (23 on the power-play), Butcher experienced the dreaded sophomore slump. He averaged over three more minutes of ice-time, and virtually the same amount of power-play time, yet he posted just 30 points (14 on the power-play) in 2018-19. New Jersey's power-play efficiency as a team dropped 3.7%, so it was to be expected that Butcher's overall production would take a hit as a result. The Devils addressed this regression with the addition of P.K. Subban, so it looks like Butcher will be squeezed off the first power-play unit due to his presence. The Devils have turned themselves into a more threatening offensive team overall, which bodes well for Butcher 5-on-5, but he will likely find himself demoted to PP2.

Coleman finished Monday night with a goal and an assist in the 6-3 win against Pittsburgh.

Fantasy Impact: Coleman has recorded nine points in his last eight games. He is proving his worth away from the penalty kill now that he has 18 goals on the season. He is a must add in deeper leagues.

Zajac opened the scoring against Pittsburgh in his amazing four point game. He finished the game with a goal and three assists in the 6-3 victory on Monday night.

Fantasy Impact: Travis recorded his first four point game this season and has pushed his point total to 31. As of now he isn't worth adding, but because he averages nearly 20 minutes a game, keep him on your radar.

Marcus Johansson got his 9th assist of the season on Brian Boyle’s goal in the third period of the Devils 2-1 overtime shootout loss to the Predators on Saturday night.

Fantasy Impact: Marcus Johansson is trying to rediscover his form from 2016-2017 with the Capitals when he scored 58 points. He spent most of last season and the start of this season injured. So it may not be until the second half until the Devils see what they expected to get when they acquired Johansson. Johansson has 6 goals and 9 assists through 29 games. Johansson may see a spike in his production while filling in for injured Taylor Hall on the first line with Nico Hischier and Kyle Palmieri. Johansson is a solid medium to deep fantasy league player.

Egor Iakovlev got his third assist of the season on Kyle Palmieri’s first period goal in the Devils 6-5 OT loss to the Ducks on Sunday night.

Fantasy Impact: Egor Iakovlev seems to be carving his own niche out with the Devils. Iakovlev has 1 goal and 3 assists through 8 games in addition to 7 assists in 7 games in the AHL. For a KHL veteran not known for his offensive output these numbers are a pleasant surprise. Iakovlev is a sneaky pickup and play in deep leagues.

Stefan Noesen corralled his 3rd assist of the season on Egor Iakovlev’s second period goal in the Devils 5-1 loss to Tampa on Monday night.

Fantasy Impact: Stefan Noesen is a good example of a player that teams need and want in real life but doesn’t translate to fantasy hockey value. Noesen is a grinding second to fourth line forward that will contribute as much in the hits department as scoring. Noesen has 2 goals and 3 assists in 18 games. Noesen has little to no value in any fantasy hockey format currently.

Sami Vatanen notched his 11th assist of the season on Egor Iakovlev’s goal in the 2nd period of the Devils 5-1 loss to Tampa on Monday night.

Fantasy Impact: Sami Vatanen, when healthy, is an offensive asset at the defenseman position. Vatanen put up a couple of high-30 point total seasons while a member of the Anaheim Ducks. Vatanen still has that potential but needs to stay healthy to accomplish that. Vatanen, as always, is on the second power play unit so he will have the opportunity to utilize his skills fully. On the season, Vatanen has 1 goal and 10 assist through 23 games. Vatanen should be good for around 30 points for the season and has value in medium to deep fantasy leagues.
