Odubel Herrera plays multiple positions and contributes in multiple categories making him a solid add

The waiver wire is the perfect place to help your team rebound, especially if your league doesn’t have a deep bench. Regardless, now that we’re 3 weeks into the season, there are still players on the waiver wire that are likely doing much better than one or two of your bench players (or even starters).

Maybe you’re fine with those players eating up a roster spot, but you may want to at least consider some other options that are fairly readily available in most leagues. The experts have chimed in on which players are worth a waiver claim that are under-owned. Read on for the pundits’ picks.

Q1. What one hitter should fantasy owners look into picking up that is owned in less than 25% of Fantasy Leagues

Odubel Herrera (2B,SS,CF, PHI) – 11% Owned
“Multi-position eligibility is huge in fantasy baseball, especially when the off days become more prevalent, and players need to be shifted around in your lineups. Herrera can provide production at three positions and is an excellent source of stolen bases, runs scored, and batting average. He also has seven extra base hits so far this season so he can add some power for those who have slugging percentages as a category in their leagues, or those in points leagues.”
Josh Collachi (XN Sports)

Wilmer Flores (2B,SS – NYM) – 5% Owned
“Shortstops aren’t in high supply, especially ones with pop. With 10 strikeouts and two walks through 14 games, Wilmer Flores is hardly the most polished hitter, but he has also offered three homers and a .479 slugging percentage. For a shortstop who hit .321/.360/.543 and 28 long balls through 162 Triple-A games, Flores doesn’t receive nearly enough attention.”
Andrew Gould (Bleacher Report)

Brad Miller (2B,SS – SEA) – 7% Owned
“Shortstop and middle infield can be one of the most irritating positions to have to manage. When there has been a lot of depth at the position like in years past, it was no big deal. These days we are left scraping the barrel in deeper leagues. I like Brad Miller for a multitude of reasons. He’s dealt with adversity and seems to have fixed the problems. He is on one of the best teams in baseball and is in the midst of a 6 game hit streak. He has enough power to reach double digits and has shown the ability to hit for average in the Minors even though that has yet to manifest at the Major League level. If you are desperate, he’d be a good one to ride with, and then discard if things start to go south.”
Ben Pritchett (Fantasy Insiders)

Chris Young (OF, NYY) – 3% Owned
“Although there is concern about his ability to stay healthy, Young has gone 15-for-42 for the Yankees in 2015, earning him a .357 batting average,  eight runs scored, four home runs, and nine RBI.”

Q2. What one pitcher should fantasy owners look into picking up that is owned in less than 25% of Fantasy Leagues

James Paxton (SP, SEA) – 21% Owned (ESPN)
“I’m a sucker for lefty pitchers that throw great fastballs. James Paxton of the Mariners is just that kind of player. Armed with a legit 95 MPH fastball and a curveball that is equally dangerous, Paxton seems to be hitting his spots well as evidenced by his reduced walk rate. He uses this arsenal to create ground balls (career 54.4 percent) and his park will help reduce damage by way of the long ball. Don’t be dissuaded by two bad starts. He’ll right the ship soon enough.”
Ben Pritchett (Fantasy Insiders)

Brandon Morrow (SP,RP, SD) – 9% Owned
“Don’t hold your breath on Morrow staying healthy for a full season, but enjoy him while he’s still on the mound. Although no longer the strikeout artist of old, his 11.0 swinging strike percentage represents his highest mark since 2011. The 30-year-old allowed two runs through as many home starts before getting shelled at Coors Field, so keep him in mind whenever he gets to pitch at Petco Park.”
Andrew Gould (Bleacher Report)

Jonathon Niese (SP, NYM) – 8% Owned
“Each year, Niese is overlooked in fantasy leagues, yet every year he finishes with a solid line in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts, and even in wins for those in leagues with wins and losses. Niese has allowed just three earned runs this season while striking out 11 in 17 innings of work. Keep in mind that most of Niese’s starts will come in a pitcher-friendly Citi Field. Half of those will come against the Phillies, Marlins, and Braves, who are among the bottom third of offenses in terms of runs scored so far this season.”
Josh Collachi (XN Sports)

Hector Santiago (SP,RP, LAA) – 1% Owned
“Santiago has gone 2-1 after three starts and 18 innings pitched in 2015, with 17 strikeouts, a 2.45 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Those numbers deserve more consideration than the 1% ownership he currently has.”
