Miguel Montero designated for assignment by Cubs Wednesday

by Mike Maher | Wed, Jun 28th 12:40pm EDT

Miguel Montero has been designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. This news comes just a day after the Washington Nationals stole seven bases on Montero, which Montero blamed on the slow delivery of pitcher Jake Arrieta. (Carrie Muskat‏ on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

This news does not come as much of a surprise after Montero was so publicly critical of Arrieta. He had thrown out just 1 of 32 potential base stealers this season, so it does not seem that Arrieta was the only problem. On the offensive side of things, he had hit pretty well this season, slashing .286 / .366 / .439, though that is in just 112 plate appearances as a backup catcher. He remains irrelevant for fantasy purposes unless he catches on with a team willing to give him significant playing time.
