Cubs sign Jason Motte to one year deal

by Dale Redman | Mon, Dec 15th 6:42pm EST

The Cubs have agreed to terms with former Cardinals reliever Jason Motte on a one year deal. Motte struggled last season after missing all of 2013 following Tommy John surgery. He posted a 4.68 ERA in 25 innings. Motte's best season was in 2012 when he recorded 42 saves while posting a 10.75 K/9 ratio in 72 innings. (Bruce Levine on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

For the Cubs, the move provides the bullpen high upside depth with a veteran that has postseason experience for little to no risk. For Motte, he gets a chance to pitch for a possible contender while hoping to rebound and extended his career. The Cubs bullpen was above average the second half of last season and with Hector Rondon already filing the closer role, Motte needs to have a strong spring training and show he is healthy to earn his way onto the staff.
