C.J. Wilson solid in first spring start

C.J. Wilson pitched three quality innings on March 7th, giving up two hits and striking out two A's batters while walking none. Wilson later said that pitch location was his biggest priority this spring.

Fantasy Impact:

Wilson finished 2014 with his highest career ERA and WHIP as a starting pitcher at 4.51 and 1.45, and pitch location was certainly a sizable issue. His strike-to-ball ratio fell from 62% in 2013 to 58% in 2014, increasing his BB/9 to 4.35. Wilson's Swing %, or percent of the time batters swing at pitches, dropped down to 38% after hovering around 42% in 2011-2013. The lefty's pitch mix also radically changed in 2014, as he moved away from his cutter and slider to throw more curveballs and changeups. Wilson will need to improve his control this spring for fantasy players to rely on him beyond spot starts against lineups that struggle against southpaws.
