Wednesday’s Probable Starters

Wandy Rodriguez, PITJulio Teheran, ATL

He may be losing his spot when Brandon Beachy returns, but he has been very solid lately. He struck out 9 with 1 BB against the Nationals last time out.

Corey Kluber (CLE) @ CC Sabathia (NYY)

Sabathia is coming off his best start of the year, but Cleveland absolutely destroys lefties. They are currently first in the majors in offensive production against left handed starters. With the short porch in right, Kluber may run into some problems against the Yankees’ lefties.

Jacob Turner (MIA)Cole Hamels (PHI)

No matter whether you think Hamels will turn it around or not, you pitch him against the Marlins. The last time he faced them he struck out 10 batters.

Bartolo Colon (OAK) @ Yovani Gallardo (MIL)

Colon comes into this start on an 18-inning scoreless streak. Despite getting the win last time out, Gallardo has given up 3+ ER in every one of his starts this month, and has failed to record a quality start in his last two.

Dylan Axelrod (CWS) @ Hisashi Iwakuma (SEA)

Iwakuma is making his case for the most consistent starter in all of baseball. Axelrod should be “safe” in Safeco. He has put a string of 4 very good starts together.

R.A. Dickey (TOR)Barry Zito (SF)

At home this season, Zito has pitched to a 1.40 ERA. He gets to face the somewhat dangerous Toronto lineup without the DH. After recording 4 complete games last season, Dickey has worked into the 7th inning only three times this year in 12 starts. He has been a disappointment to say the least.

Matt Garza (CHC) Jason Vargas (LAA)

Vargas has been by far the most consistent starter in the Angels rotation. He has recorded quality starts in 7 of his last 8. Garza is still in the process of getting stretched out, recording his first quality start since returning from injury against the D-Backs. He went seven innings and struck out four with no walks.

Dillon Gee (NYM)Dan Haren (WSH)

This is a matchup play, but I’d be lying if I said I felt great about it. Haren does have the element of surprise though as he has yet to face the Mets this year.

Alex Cobb (TB) @ Doug Fister (DET)

You’re starting both of these guys every time regardless of matchup.

Jon Garland (COL)Johnny Cueto (CIN)

Cueto has been very good in his three starts since returning from injury. He’s only allowed 4 ER in 21 IP (small sample size, I know). He will continue to improve.

Alexi Ogando (TEX) @ John Lackey (BOS)

Not risking either one of these guys. The Texas offense is too good, and this is Ogando’s first start coming off of an arm injury. And more often than not, bicep really means elbow.

Freddy Garcia (BAL) @ Dallas Keuchel (HOU)

Garcia has been surprisingly good. He shutout the Nationals over 8 innings in his last start, striking out six with no walks. He’s only walked six batter in 35.1 IP this season.

P.J. Walters (MIN)Jeremy Guthrie (KC)

The homeruns are getting to be worrisome with Guthrie, but Minnesota ranks 24th in the majors in that department, so I’ll give him a shot.

Wade Miley (ARI) @ Joe Kelly (STL)

Rough matchups for both. Who knows though? Based on what the other young Cardinals pitchers have done so far, Kelly could be unhittable.

Jason Marquis (SD)Clayton Kershaw (LAD)

YUP.
