Dynasty Draft Sleepers: Veteran Wide Receivers (2023 Fantasy Football)

Dynasty Draft Sleepers: Veteran Wide Receivers (2023 Fantasy Football)

The gap between the rookie draft and offseason activities is one of the slowest times for trades in dynasty fantasy football leagues. Teams have drafted their players, they’ve checked their lineups, and for the most part, they’ve started checking out a bit.

That doesn’t mean you should, too, though. There are plenty of values to be had out there; you just have to look in the right places. Here are some veteran wide receivers being slept on in most leagues that can help you win your title in 2023.

Dynasty Draft Values to Target: Wide Receiver

Here are veteran values to consider for your dynasty startup drafts.

DeAndre Hopkins (WR – FA)

With the news of DeAndre Hopkins’ release, this article got a lot more interesting. As of the time of this writing, Hopkins doesn’t yet have a home, but the odds are good he’ll find one soon. I also think wherever he goes will be a great team with aspirations of a Super Bowl run. That really just means the Bills, the Chiefs, or the 49ers to me. I’m leaning toward the Bills, but no matter what, Hopkins will be a tried and true producer wherever he goes.

Whoever currently rosters Hopkins in your league isn’t going to sell him for pennies, even on this news, but this might be your last chance to add him at any sort of discount. Once he signs somewhere his price immediately goes up. In 2023 Hopkins wasn’t exactly explosive, but this change could light a fire in him. I think Hopkins has true flex value at the very least, and I’ll take that kind of production over a draft pick or younger player with upside all day.

Amari Cooper (WR – CLE)

Amari Cooper is one of those players where the name is somehow worth less than the production. In some leagues, Cooper is going for a late first or equivalently valued player. He finished as WR10 overall last year (WR18 in points per game). That was with spotty QB production. I fully expect QB Deshaun Watson to hit the ground running and for Cooper to bear the brunt of the reward. He’s a terrific target for a contending team looking for points in their lineup, even as an older receiver.

Mike Evans (WR – TB)

I get the concern about Mike Evans, I do. He went from one of the greatest QBs ever to *checks notes* Baker Mayfield, or Kyle Trask. Oof.

But his current dynasty ECR of WR41 is insulting. Evans is a consistent producer, gaining over 1,000 yards every season of his career. He finished as WR17 overall and WR14 in points per game last year while playing in 15 games. He still amassed 1,124 yards on 127 targets. He might be behind the eight-ball due to the QB play, but he’s far from washed and could be added for a steal in the right league. He’s definitely someone worth asking about as we head into the summer.

Keenan Allen (WR – LAC)

Directly behind Evans in dynasty ECR is Chargers Keenan Allen at WR42. I mean, I get it. Allen is no spring chicken, and he’s missed a fair amount of time due to injury recently. That said, he finished as WR12 in points per game in 10 games. When he plays, he’s a beast.

The offense could look slightly different due to the addition of Joe Lombardi as offensive coordinator, but Allen doesn’t worry me. He’s still the WR1 on this team and should be able to produce WR2 value for your fantasy team when healthy. You might be able to add him to your roster for less than you think too. Allen is a prime candidate for a veteran sleeper.

Tyler Lockett (WR – SEA)

Most dynasty managers have had Tyler Lockett on their rosters at some point by now. He’s been a consistent producer regardless of the QB throwing him the ball. His WR13 overall finish in 2022 isn’t a fluke. Lockett scores points. The Seahawks added Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the NFL Draft, but I don’t expect him to eat into Lockett’s production all that much in 2023. Lockett is the perfect throw-in addition to a larger trade you won’t regret. I’m looking for him in almost every league where I need starting roster help. He’s just that kind of player.

Michael Thomas (WR – NO)

What hasn’t been said about former dynasty 1.01 Michael Thomas? The last two seasons have basically been worthless for fantasy purposes, and I wouldn’t be shocked if you’re not interested at all. Trust me; I get it.

That said, in the three games that Thomas played in last year, he put up decent numbers, and maybe all of this time off has allowed him to truly rest and come back 100%. The best part is that the risk is so small because everyone is so out on him. Yet, the reward could be huge. A new QB could light a fire under Thomas to show us all what a 30-year-old receiver can do. I mean, at his current cost, I’m willing to take the chance. Are you?
