Fantasy Baseball Risers & Fallers: Ryan McMahon, Will Brennan, Taylor Ward

We have made it through another week of the MLB season, and there were some awe-inspiring performances. But, as usual, there were some great and rough performances to dig into. This weekly column will help highlight some hot and cold players, risers, and fallers for fantasy purposes. Some players are already rostered in many places, so trades may be in order. Other players may be widely available, making a potential waiver wire claim in the cards. So this week, I will highlight some known and lesser-known players. So let’s see some of the risers and fallers for fantasy baseball Week 10 (5/29-6/4).

FantasyPros My Playbook

Risers

Ryan McMahon (2B, 3B – COL)

After a strong week in Coors, McMahon kept the good times going at the plate this week. He hit safely in four of five games entering Sunday with two home runs, a triple, and a double. He had a .375 ISO, 1.333 OPS, and a 41.7% hard-hit rate.

McMahon is hitting .263 on the season with nine home runs and four stolen bases. He has a solid .225 ISO with a 13% barrel rate and a 48.6% hard-hit rate. McMahon looks poised for another 20-25 home run season with 10+ stolen bases. His homestand continues in Coors, so let’s get another big week from McMahon.

Will Brennan (OF – CLE)

Brennan is receiving regular playing time, and he is running with it. Entering Sunday, Brennan hit safely in all five games with a home run, a stolen base, and a .526 batting average. He did not have a barrel but had a 33% hard-hit rate and a 1.339 OPS. Brennan has a favorable schedule this week, so ride the hot streak while you can and see if it turns into something long-term.

Joey Wiemer (OF – MIL)

Wiemer started the season slowly but has become more comfortable at the plate, and his performance has followed. Wiemer entered Sunday riding a four-game hitting streak of two doubles, a home run, and two stolen bases. Wiemer’s plate discipline was more impressive, as he walked 26.3% of the time with a 10.5% strikeout rate. Wiemer’s defense will keep him in the lineup, and this current production makes for some excellent fantasy appeal.

Taylor Ward (OF – LAA)

Ward has been struggling lately, so he was losing playing time to Mickey Moniak. However, the playing time has returned this past week, and so has Ward’s production. Ward entered Sunday, having hit safely in all five games with two home runs and a double. Ward also had a .318 ISO with a 1.162 OPS. His contact quality was outstanding, with an 11.8% barrel rate and 58.8% hard-hit rate. If he continues to hit, Ward will return to the everyday leadoff role for the Angels and be a great fantasy asset.

Miles Mikolas (SP – STL)

It was a slow start to the season for Mikolas, but he has rebounded nicely and returned to being a serviceable fantasy starter. This past week he threw 13 innings while allowing just two earned runs, zero walks, and collecting 12 strikeouts. Mikolas now has a 3.74 ERA and 4.14 xFIP, so with the struggles of starting pitchers this year, he can provide a nice safety net to fantasy rotations.

Fallers

Jurickson Profar (OF – COL)

Profar has been struggling in a big way of late, and this past week was no exception. Profar entered Sunday with one single over five games. He had a .000 ISO, .258 OPS, and -28 wRC+ and Profar is now hitting .229 on the season with five home runs and no stolen bases. He has a whole week in Coors coming up, but without a strong week he could start losing some playing time, eventually losing all fantasy relevance.

Jake Cronenworth (1B, 2B, SS – SD)

Cronenworth is amid a major slump, and he collected just two singles through six games this past week. Cronenworth did not collect a barrel with a hard-hit rate below 25%. He usually showcases good contact skills, but he struck out over 40% of the time this past week. Cronenworth will have a long leash with the Padres, but production like this makes him better suited for your fantasy bench.

Brett Baty (3B – NYM)

Baty’s struggles continued this past week with one hit (a double) over four games. He struck out 43.8% of the time, and had zero barrels, along with a 42.6% hard-hit rate. Baty continues to split playing time at third base, which hurts his fantasy appeal, but poor production makes Baty nearly unrosterable. Baty needs to turn it around quickly to maintain even his limited fantasy appeal.

Jarren Duran (OF – BOS)

Duran’s comeback season started great when he was first called up, but recently his production has dwindled significantly. Duran collected just four hits this past week while striking out over 30% of the time. Duran did have a 50% hard-hit rate which is nice, but no home runs and no stolen bases will not help the fantasy production. Adam Duvall will return from the IL on June 9, so Duran must pick up production quickly to keep his starting job with the Red Sox.

Noah Syndergaard (SP – LAD)

Syndergaard is having a horrible season, and this past week was just another horrendous start. He threw five innings while allowing five runs, three home runs, and two strikeouts. Syndergaard now has a 6.54 ERA and 4.57 xFIP with an 11.4% K-BB. Julio Urias will return to the Dodgers rotation soon, and that could lead to an exit by Syndergaard.
