5 Fantasy Football WR/CB Matchups to Know (Week 6)

5 Fantasy Football WR/CB Matchups to Know (Week 6)

With just the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on bye this week, fantasy managers do have a wider pool of wide receivers to choose from this week.

However, whilst the pool of wide receivers to choose from might be larger, it then brings really tight start/sit decisions for fantasy managers this week.

Therefore, I have highlighted five WR/CB Matchups to know for Week 6. Three of them would be advantageous with upside and two of them carry some significant risk.

WR/CB Matchups: Week 6

Advantageous Wide Receiver Matchups

Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill (MIA) vs. D’Shaun Jamison and C.J. Henderson (CAR)

The Carolina Panthers are 0-5 for many reasons. But their secondary struggles this season are one of the bigger ones. They cannot seem to stop offenses scoring against them. I highlighted the Carolina secondary last week for Josh Reynolds, who took full advantage in a 4-76-1 day.

The last thing the Panthers would want this week, after starting 0-5, is to play the highest-scoring offense in the NFL. And, for, Waddle and Hill, they have significant plus matchups this week. Jamison and Henderson interchange a lot and swap sides, as both players have played less than 50% of their snaps on either side (Jamison has lined up in the slot 5% of the time and Henderson 3% of the time, hence why they are less than 50% of snaps on either side).

Jamison is giving up 0.47 fantasy points per route run against him, according to FantasyPoints Data Suite, which is the fourth most amongst cornerbacks in the NFL. Henderson is giving up 0.39 fantasy points per route run against him, which is tied for 12th most amongst cornerbacks currently.

Waddle and Hill will exploit this secondary with their speed and length. Expect the Dolphins to have another big week in scoring, with Waddle and Hill making up for injuries in the run game.

Jakobi Meyers (LV) vs. J.C. Jackson (NE)

Jackson has had a really difficult season. After being a healthy scratch for the L.A. Chargers, he was traded to New England as they were disappointed with his level of play, after handing him a large contract in free agency in 2022.

Jackson is currently giving up 0.44 fantasy points per route run against him this season, which is tied for 7th most amongst cornerbacks currently. However, what is perhaps more alarming is that Jackson is being targeted 25.8% of targets run against him, which is the most of any cornerback in the NFL. That shows that offensive coordinators are not afraid to target Jackson.

Meyers has been an effective resource for the Raiders this season, despite their offensive struggles. Meyers is scoring 0.55 fantasy points per route run, which is tied for 13th amongst wide receivers. So this matchup is a high-performing wide receiver versus a low-performing cornerback. Expect Meyers and the Raiders to exploit this matchup against the Patriots this week.

Gabe Davis (BUF) vs. Tre Hawkins (NYG)

Whilst the Bills were pretty poor offensively in London, Gabe Davis had a decent fantasy day and found the endzone. This week he is up against Hawkins and the Giants, who have struggled on both sides of the ball.

Hawkins is giving up 0.38 fantasy points per route run against him, which is tied for 15th among all cornerbacks prior to Week 6. The Giants have struggled to contain offenses so far this season, as they are the 29th-ranked scoring defense currently.

Davis, and Stefon Diggs, should have a good week this week against the Giants and the matchup is heavily in their favour. If Davis is in your start/sit conversations this week, lean towards starting him based on this matchup.

Challenging Wide Receiver Matchups

Wan’Dale Robinson (NYG) vs. Taron Johnson (BUF)

Taron Johnson has been keeping opponents in check all season. Less than 3% of the routes run against him result in targets, which is the lowest amongst all cornerbacks entering Week 6. This is resulting in 0.05 fantasy points per route run against him. This is ranked second lowest currently.

Robinson has been banged up a fair bit this season, missing the opening couple of games. He also left the field of play on Sunday with a concussion.

However, even if Robinson is good to go this weekend, he is certainly a sit candidate against Johnson and the Bills. Fantasy managers should explore other options.

Marquise Brown (ARI) vs. Derion Kendrick (LA)

Brown has had an okay fantasy season, taking advantage of being the Cardinals’ leading receiver, and against advantageous matchups. However, this week is not a matchup Brown is a favorite in.

Kendrick has had an impressive season. His 0.14 fantasy points per route run against him currently rank him in the top 10 (t-9th) of all cornerbacks entering Week 6. He has also played 99% of his snaps as the right-sided cornerback. The Cardinals might shift Brown around to avoid this head-to-head matchup directly. However, if he does lineup against Kendrick 50% of the time or better, fantasy managers will require Brown to have a breakaway play on his other snaps in order to have a fantasy-relevant day.

Whilst fantasy managers might struggle to sit Brown this week, if there are better alternatives on their bench, they should utilize them. If not, just be prepared for a lower-than-normal ceiling day against a stingy Kendrick and even stingier Rams defense.
