Fantasy Basketball Trade Advice (Week 1)
Trade For
The ascension of Devin Vassell will be frequently lost in the Victor Wembanyama hype this season. The fourth-year wing was limited to just 38 games last season but improved on his minutes per game, scoring average, FG%, 3P% and more than doubled his assist average from his sophomore season. In the opener against Dallas, Vassell led the Spurs in shot attempts and minutes. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he did so throughout the entire season on a per-game basis.
San Antonio matches up with Houston, the Clippers and Phoenix twice in the next week, so there’s certainly an opportunity for some considerable scoring outputs for Vassell in the short term.
Players to Trade For Him Who Are Ranked Higher: Cameron Johnson, Tyler Herro, Terry Rozier
Trade Away
Cam Thomas had an incredibly good game coming off the bench to open the season, but we’ve seen this movie before. In each month of last season, Thomas averaged 1.0 (two games), 7.3, 5.9, 9.6, 23.5, 6.6 and 16.0 (three games) points per game and 7.0, 16.6, 10.3, 14.3, 27.8, 13.0 and 18.7 minutes per game. Time and time again, the LSU product followed up impressive showings with seven-minute dud outings. What’s going to make this season any different?
Sell high on Thomas to someone who believes that this will be his year.
Players to Trade Him For Who Are Ranked Lower: Corey Kispert, Josh Okogie
Trade For
In his final 17 games of last season, Paolo Banchero averaged nearly 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists while shooting 44% from the field. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Julius Randle, LeBron James, Jayson Tatum and Luka Doncic were the only players to achieve at least that same line last season.
Banchero didn’t do much in Orlando’s 116-86 thrashing of the Rockets. He shot more free throws than field goals in 28 minutes of play, five less than last year’s average.
If you subscribe to the idea that Orlando will be a much-improved team this season, Banchero is the perfect player to watch blossom into a star on your fantasy team.
Players to Trade For Him Who Are Ranked Higher: Jrue Holiday, Jalen Williams, Cameron Johnson
Trade Away
Matisse Thybulle (POR – SG, SF)
The Trail Blazers are incredibly guard-heavy. Matisse Thybulle certainly has his place on the team as the star perimeter defender, but the Blazers’ development of Scoot Henderson, Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe as a unit comes before their fielding of Thybulle for defensive purposes. Plus, Malcolm Brogdon is there, too, for now anyway.
Moreover, on the nights that Thybulle doesn’t nab three or four steals (like Portland’s opening night), you’ll be frustrated with his offensive limitations.
