2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jalen Milroe

Jalen Milroe (QB – Alabama)

6-foot-2 | 225 Pounds

Background

A four-star recruit out of Texas who redshirted in 2021 after playing sparingly over four games, Jalen Milroe started one out of eight games played the following year, throwing five touchdowns and rushing for another on the season. Milroe took over as the team’s starter in 2023 after Bryce Young left for the NFL, bringing Alabama to the National Championship game in an 11-2 campaign.

He threw for 2,834 yards (65.8%), 23 touchdowns and six interceptions that season with a 161-531-12 rushing line in now-Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees’ offense. This past year, Milroe went 9-4 and posted 2,844 passing yards (64.3%), with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, with a 168-726-20 rushing line in Kalen DeBoer’s offense.

Positives

A productive two-year starter and winner for a major program. A sturdily-built quarterback who has proven his durability over the past two seasons. Light on his feet in the pocket, with a sufficiently wide base at the top of his drops. Has excellent athleticism, but is happy to work from the pocket while it’s there. Shows the ability to play with rhythm and get the ball out quickly on predetermined reads underneath.

Milroe was asked to work through progressions and showed good patience in scanning for targets. His release is relatively quick, and the ball leaps out of his hand. Has plenty of arm talent to make all the throws, with impressive zip on the ball; can get it there with his arm strength alone when working in a messy pocket. Gets good air underneath his sideline shots. Very dangerous athlete who looks decisive when he decides to run, taking advantage of openings and showing impressive speed and explosiveness.

Alabama designed plenty of runs/option concepts for him, especially this past season. A strong build allows him to get physical with defenders, punishing smaller defenders and finishing runs well; projects as a weapon in short-yardage/goal-line situations. Has some wiggle to make defenders miss in space. Can shrug off rushers in the backfield and shows the ability to extend the play while keeping his eyes downfield.

Negatives

Wasn’t as efficient this past season in a new offense, so some questions about his trajectory exist. Height measurement will be important, as he’s currently considered closer to adequate there. Lets his mechanics get slack on more routine throws at times, leading to off-target throws that force adjustments or lead to incompletions; the routine is not always routine. Sort of a one-speed thrower who could take something off of his shorter passes.

Milroe has some tendencies to miss low/behind targets over the middle at the intermediate level. Overthrows a lot of his downfield shots, with iffy accuracy and inconsistent weight transfer. Struggled this season when he wasn’t able to work off of play-action passes. Got to operate from a lot of clean pockets and was a 43.5% passer under pressure in each of the past two seasons, per Pro Football Focus (PFF). Could cut some of his designed sweeps upfield sooner; has some tendency to keep heading toward the boundary in search of a bigger play, leading to plays where he’s tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Summary

One of the most physically and athletically gifted dual-threat quarterback prospects you’ll see, with plenty of arm strength and elite speed, explosiveness and power as a runner who has some work to do on his game. To reach his sky-high potential he needs to show more consistent weight transfer on his throws, increased touch underneath, slightly faster processing and improved play under pressure.

However, those types of issues could be remedied with experience and coaching, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a patient and somewhat risk-tolerant team take a shot on him in the first round.
