2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough (QB – Louisville)
6-foot-5 | 225 Pounds
Background
Tyler Shough was a four-star recruit who originally attended Oregon. Redshirted after three appearances in 2018, then backed up Justin Herbert in 2019. Started throughout the shortened 2020 season, going 4-3 as the starter (1,559 yards, 13 touchdowns, six interceptions). Transferred to Texas Tech, where he started 13 games over three seasons with the Red Raiders, going 9-4 as the starter and totaling 2,922 yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He then transferred to Louisville for the 2024 season, going 8-4 as the starter and finishing with 3,195 yards (62.7% completion rate, 8.2 yards per attempt), 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Positives
A prototypically-built quarterback with 32 career starts between three programs, with 2024 being his best year yet. Looks light on his feet in the pocket. Went through some progressions in school and shows the ability to come off of his primary read and hit a check-down pass.
Shough is an aggressive quarterback who’s not afraid to test defenses downfield. There are some flashes of anticipation on his tape. Has a quick, compact release and gets the ball out quickly; you can see it jump out of his hand. Able to lower/modify his release point as needed. Arm talent is impressive, with a tight spiral and plenty of zip on his throws.
Shough has the confidence to trust his arm into tight windows. Gets plenty of arc on downfield/sideline shots. Can muscle throws to his receivers with his arm alone, even when backpedaling away from pressure. Ball placement is generally good, especially when making first-read throws from a clean pocket.
Takes something off of swings and designed screens where appropriate. Not very athletic, but is capable of moving the pocket or throwing on designed rollouts, with good off-platform throwing ability. Can buy time to extend the play while still scanning downfield.
Negatives
Spent seven years in school and will be a 26-year-old rookie. Was asked to make some impressive pro-style throws, but a lot of Louisville’s offense consisted of screens and other short throws within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Has some tendencies to stare down his primary read. Feet come together a bit on some of his drops.
Doesn’t always transfer weight into shorter throws, relying on his arm strength to power passes in. Tends to throw lots of passes off of his back foot when facing pressure. Sprays some throws further downfield. Essentially a pure pocket passer who doesn’t offer much as a runner.
Can sometimes try to do too much on a snap, rather than live to fight another day. Shows some pretty consistent gunslinger tendencies when facing pressure. Risks turning a bad play into a disaster when throwing the ball away would be safer.
Summary
One of the more talented throwers in the class, with a quick release, the ability to alter his arm angle and impressive arm strength to all three levels of the field and when throwing off-platform.
While Shough is capable of extending the play, he isn’t a threat as a runner. His gunslinger tendencies could lead to turnovers at the next level. Consequently, looks like a bit of a talented developmental option whose age might cause him to be more of a late-round pick.

Shedeur Sanders (QB – Colorado)
A confident rhythm-based passer who works through progressions, makes pretty good decisions with the football and throws with impressive accuracy/placement. At his best, pulls the trigger early, puts the ball right on his target and works his way down the field methodically through a series of short and intermediate throws over the middle of the field.
However, Sadners can sometimes be too slow to get the ball out, can’t consistently escape from pressure when he’s being pursued and his overall arm talent is closer to adequate. Could draw a wide range of evaluations, as he’s not a perfect fit for every scheme, but still looks to be in the conversation for the first overall pick. He should easily be one of the first two or three passers off the board.

A highly productive five-year starter who made major strides this past season after arriving at Miami. Ward plays with impressive composure, shows the ability to work through full-field reads and has solid arm talent and accuracy. Is capable of escaping from pressure and making the occasional splash play. At the same time, there are some risky elements to his game, which often come as a result of trying to do too much, leading to dangerous throws, interceptions or fumbles.
Consequently, how willing teams are to tolerate that risk to reap the rewards of his playmaking skills will be interesting to monitor. Either way, Ward is among the candidates to go first overall and should be one of the first couple of quarterbacks off the board.

One of the most physically and athletically gifted dual-threat quarterback prospects you’ll see, with plenty of arm strength and elite speed, explosiveness and power as a runner who has some work to do on his game. To reach his sky-high potential he needs to show more consistent weight transfer on his throws, increased touch underneath, slightly faster processing and improved play under pressure.
However, those types of issues could be remedied with experience and coaching, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a patient and somewhat risk-tolerant team take a shot on him in the first round.
