2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jaxson Dart

Jaxson Dart (QB – Mississippi)

6-foot-2 | 225 Pounds

Background

Jaxson Dart was a four-star recruit who originally attended Southern California. Started three games as a freshman there, losing all three (1,353 yards, nine touchdowns, five interceptions.) Transferred to Mississippi once Lincoln Riley was hired and Caleb Williams‘ transfer to the Trojans appeared imminent.

Took over the starting role at Ole Miss, going 7-5 as a starter in his first season, finishing with 2,974 yards (62.4% completion rate, 8.2 yards per attempt), 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, adding 614 yards on the ground. Led the team to an 11-2 record the next season, with 3,364 yards (65.1% completion rate, 9.4 yards per attempt), 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, with another eight rushing touchdowns.

This past season, Dart enjoyed his most impressive campaign, going 10-3 as a starter with a final line of 4,279 yards (69.3% completion rate, 10.8 yards per attempt), 29 touchdowns and six interceptions. Throughout his career at Mississippi, Dart put up a 371-1,498-12 rushing line.

Positives

Highly productive three-year starter who made significant strides each year. His size is adequate for a pro quarterback. Has a smooth release with a high release point. Gets the ball out on time on the rhythm throws that were a staple of the team’s offense, with a lot of slants, hitches, flats and screens.

Willing to go to his check-down option or kill the play when his primary read isn’t there. Cut down interceptions significantly over the past two seasons. Throws a catchable ball with a nice touch and pretty good accuracy, especially when working over the middle of the field. Gets good air under throws to layer them in over coverage or drop passes into buckets down the sidelines; shows some anticipation when targeting receivers down the sidelines.

Dart shows some ability to manipulate defenders to create second-window throwing opportunities. Above-average athlete who moves pretty well in the pocket and is capable of escaping from pressure and extending the play; has some playmaker traits when the play breaks down, as he does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield. Shows good toughness to stand in the pocket and take a hit or when fighting for yards as a runner.

Negatives

Heels click when resetting his feet on some of his drops. Tends to stare down his target, with a lot of predetermined, first-read throws; wasn’t asked to go through many progressions compared with other top quarterback prospects. Doesn’t have a particularly strong arm. Some of his balls hang in the air.

Dart might struggle to consistently rip passes out to the sidelines or into tight windows at the next level, as his shots tend to be anticipation-based bucket throws rather than lasers downfield. Placement can be inconsistent, as he doesn’t always operate from a stable base and transfer weight effectively; some unnecessary off-platform throws when the pocket is still clean. Doesn’t sense pressure quite as quickly as you’d like.

Summary

An experienced, productive college quarterback who throws with accuracy and touch over the middle of the field, Dart shows anticipation on some sideline shots and can extend the play as an athlete. However, from a mechanical standpoint, his lack of mechanical consistency can lead to issues with ball placement.

Dart’s arm talent is closer to adequate and he’s coming from an offense based heavily on first-read throws. Consequently, has drawn a pretty wide range of evaluations, so he could go higher, but looks more like a mid-round value.

Shedeur Sanders (QB – Colorado)

A confident rhythm-based passer who works through progressions, makes pretty good decisions with the football and throws with impressive accuracy/placement. At his best, pulls the trigger early, puts the ball right on his target and works his way down the field methodically through a series of short and intermediate throws over the middle of the field.

However, Sadners can sometimes be too slow to get the ball out, can’t consistently escape from pressure when he’s being pursued and his overall arm talent is closer to adequate. Could draw a wide range of evaluations, as he’s not a perfect fit for every scheme, but still looks to be in the conversation for the first overall pick. He should easily be one of the first two or three passers off the board.

Cam Ward (QB – Miami)

A highly productive five-year starter who made major strides this past season after arriving at Miami. Ward plays with impressive composure, shows the ability to work through full-field reads and has solid arm talent and accuracy. Is capable of escaping from pressure and making the occasional splash play. At the same time, there are some risky elements to his game, which often come as a result of trying to do too much, leading to dangerous throws, interceptions or fumbles.

Consequently, how willing teams are to tolerate that risk to reap the rewards of his playmaking skills will be interesting to monitor. Either way, Ward is among the candidates to go first overall and should be one of the first couple of quarterbacks off the board.

Jalen Milroe (Alabama)

One of the most physically and athletically gifted dual-threat quarterback prospects you’ll see, with plenty of arm strength and elite speed, explosiveness and power as a runner who has some work to do on his game. To reach his sky-high potential he needs to show more consistent weight transfer on his throws, increased touch underneath, slightly faster processing and improved play under pressure.

However, those types of issues could be remedied with experience and coaching, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a patient and somewhat risk-tolerant team take a shot on him in the first round.
