2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Terrance Ferguson

Terrance Ferguson (TE – Oregon)

6-foot-5 | 255 Pounds

Background

Terrance Ferguson was a four-star recruit who started eight out of 13 games played as a freshman, finishing with 17-141-2 (8.3) on the year. Was again a part-time starter in 2022, with 32-391-5 (12.2) on the year, leading the team in snaps at the position but rotating with two other players. He has been a full-time starter since then, with 42-414-6 (9.9) in 2023 and 43-591-3 (13.7) this past season.

Positives

Ferguson is an experienced tight end with essentially three years worth of starts under his belt. A tall, sturdily-built player who looks like a modern in-line “Y” tight end. Lines up all over the formation, playing as an in-line option, as an H-Back and as a receiver, with a relatively even distribution. Was often asked to motion and insert against linebackers in the run game. Engages with good form and a solid base as a blocker, showing good toughness and a sense of urgency; anchor and functional strength are above average for a modern tight end.

Works hard to stick with his man through the whistle, and drives his feet after contact. In the passing game, runs over routes, delayed releases, sneaks and flat routes, and stalks in the screen game. A smooth, relatively fast athlete who is capable of putting some pressure on defenses on runaway routes/man-beaters like overs, crossers and other patterns of that nature.

Looks pretty fast working down the seams. Shows a good feel for the soft spots in zone coverage. Makes nice adjustments to throws away from his frame. Not the most powerful runner after the catch, but does a pretty nice job of getting upfield quickly and showing competitiveness to turn man-beaters into first downs.

Negatives

Ferguson’s length could be a bit less than usual for a player with his size, so measurements could be important. His ability to sustain blocks is adequate, but can struggle to make it to the whistle because of balance issues and being a bit of a leaner. Tends to drop his head and bend at the waist at times. Has some trouble lining up opponents on the move when pulling or blocking from motion across the formation in the run game.

Not the most accurate with his chips, or the best seller, when making delayed releases. Route-running could use more attention to detail, as he tends to glide through the stems of some of his routes. Dropped four passes this past year. Despite his size, hasn’t been a very impressive tight end in contested catch situations, going just 8/22 on his career (36.4%), per Pro Football Focus (PFF). His power and physicality as a runner are a bit less than anticipated.

Summary

A big tight end who can be moved around the offense, serving as an in-line option, an H-Back or a slot receiver, and who shows above-average athleticism, functional strength and competitiveness. Still not a finished product at this point, however, as his balance and ability to sustain as a blocker leave something to be desired.

Ferguson also hasn’t been able to successfully use his frame to win contested catches as often as expected. Has been getting some second-day consideration and could eventually justify that, but as it currently stands, seems more like a mid-round value.

Projection: Round 3/Round 4

Tight Ends

Colston Loveland (Michigan)

A very solid overall tight end who has the type of polish you’d expect given his pedigree. Loveland lined up split out wide or in the slot very often during the games reviewed, showing impressive speed, route-running skills and body control. Provided the Wolverines with a reliable target who could create mismatches against different types of defenders.

Despite not being a primary inline blocker for the team, he is also a physical, aggressive and tough blocker with good effort, sound fundamentals and impressive functional strength. A do-it-all type who looks likely to be a first-round pick at this point, although Lovelans is not quite the physical/athletic freak that typically goes in the first round at his position.

Projection: Round 1/Round 2

Tyler Warren (Penn State)

A big, smooth and versatile tight end who has the functional strength to execute different blocking assignments and who stuffed the stat sheet as one of the focal points of Penn State’s offense this year.

Running a variety of different routes from different alignments and showing the ability to create on underneath throws or come down with contested catches, Warren looks like a reliable option with the skills to play either inline or as a flex option at the next level. Looks likely to be one of the first two tight ends off the board, potentially as high as the first round.

Projection: Round 1/Round 2

Mason Taylor (LSU)

Just a big, tough tight end who works hard to sustain in the run game and who presents his quarterback with a big target and a reliable pair of hands underneath. Taylor was asked to execute various blocking assignments and line up all over the offense in school, so as a three-year SEC starter with pro bloodlines, the level of polish is about what you’d expect.

May never be the fastest or most dynamic receiver, but it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to envision Taylor developing into a no-frills, starting-caliber in-line tight end.
