Fantasy Football Burning Questions
What is Going on in San Francisco?
Christian McCaffrey‘s status was the biggest question mark entering last weekend, popping up on the injury report with a calf injury, listed as questionable for Week 1. Come Sunday, McCaffrey showed no sign of any limitations, leading the NFL in both touches (31) and opportunities (32). He did a little bit of everything on offense, rushing 22 times for 69 yards on the ground to go along with nine receptions on 10 targets for 73 yards through the air, leading the team with a 28.6% target share.
Although McCaffrey made it through the game unscathed, the 49ers lost notable pieces on their offense, likely without both George Kittle and Brock Purdy this upcoming week. Kittle was placed on injured reserve (IR) with a strained hamstring, set to miss at least four games, while Purdy is currently listed as doubtful for Week 2, dealing with a shoulder injury and turf toe. Jauan Jennings is also on the injury report after suffering a shoulder injury late in the game. As a result, Mac Jones is in line to draw the start this weekend and could be the long-term answer under center as long as Purdy is out.
Is Danny Dimes the Answer?
The Colts dominated Miami from start to finish, leading the NFL with a +25-point differential and winning their first season opener since 2023. The organization received a lot of backlash for their decision to bench 2023 No. 4 overall draft pick Anthony Richardson, but they were proven right in Week 1.
Daniel Jones was phenomenal in his season debut, finishing as the QB3 in fantasy, completing over 75% of his dropbacks (22-of-29, 75.9%) for 272 yards and a touchdown, while tacking on 26 yards and two scores with his legs. It’s hard to take too much away from a one-game sample. However, Jones will get tested this week, going on the road and facing a Broncos team that ranked fourth in defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA) with a -11.6% rate on defense last season and fifth against the pass (-5.2%), while allowing the third-fewest points per game (19) in 2024.
How Bad are the Dolphins?
The Dolphins were humiliated in Week 1, losing 33-8 to the Colts. They were abysmal on both sides of the ball, but the state of the offense was especially concerning given the talent. Tua Tagovailoa had one of his worst games of his career, completing 14 out of 23 pass attempts (60.9%) for 114 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, finishing dead last in quarterback rating (3.8), total expected points added (EPA) at a rate of -14.99 and pass EPA (-15.43).
Entering Week 2, head coach Mike McDaniel is already on the hot seat, while rumors of a potential Tyreek Hill trade continue to escalate. It’s still early in the season, but it already feels like a must-win game for Miami, who is currently a slight 1.5-point favorite at home against the Patriots.
