NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer
NBA DFS Core Plays
Alperen Sengun (PF, C – HOU)
- DraftKings: $9,600
- FanDuel: $10,000
Let’s start in the frontcourt and build around Alperen Sengun, who has a super attractive matchup against the Spurs. San Antonio has an opponent rank of 22nd, and he is averaging 47 fantasy points per game. It’s a great situation for the pivot.
Sengun has double-doubles in two of the past three games, averaging 23 points, 3.5 assists, 11 rebounds, three steals and one block per game in the past two outings. The last time he faced the Spurs in the NBA Cup tournament, he flirted with a triple-double, scoring 25 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out eight assists.
Scottie Barnes (PF – TOR)
- DraftKings: $9,400
- FanDuel: $9,200
Scottie Barnes has been playing at a high level in January, averaging 21.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.3 steals. He has 22+ points and at least seven rebounds in each of the past three games, and he has six or more assists in four of the past seven outings.
We’re going to go to the Barnes well, hoping for a repeat of his performance in the first meeting in Toronto against Golden State. The Raptors posted a 141-127 overtime win on December 28th at Scotiabank Arena, with Barnes matching a franchise record with 25 rebounds, to go along with 23 points and 10 assists for a triple-double.
Anthony Edwards (SG – MIN)
- DraftKings: $9,200
- FanDuel: $9,800
Anthony Edwards is coming off an amazing performance last time out in San Antonio, throwing down a season-high 55 points in a 126-123 loss on Saturday, while adding four rebounds, three assists and nine three-pointers. He went 19-of-33 from the field.
Edwards is already scoring at a high rate, averaging 29.8 points per game, but he has exceeded that a bit with an average of 31.7 points in seven games in January. He’s also averaging 4.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 4.4 three-pointers and one steal per game during that span. In two previous meetings against the Jazz this season, Edwards scored at least 35 points in both meetings, averaging 36 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while hitting a total of 12 three-pointers.
NBA DFS Cash Game Targets
Julius Randle (PF – MIN)
- DraftKings: $8,200
- FanDuel: $8,700
Julius Randle faces a Utah Jazz defense with an opponent rank of 30. He is rolling up 42.3 fantasy points per game and is coming off a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three steals and two blocks on Saturday at San Antonio.
Randle is averaging 23 points, nine assists, 9.5 rebounds and two steals in two games versus Utah this season, while going a combined 2-of-8 (25.0%) from behind the three-point line. Randle should be able to roll up a strong stat line against the defensively-challenged Jazz.
Peyton Watson (SF, PF – DEN)
- DraftKings: $7,600
- FanDuel: $7,500
Peyton Watson has been a mainstay in the DFS scene since Nikola Jokic went down with an injury. He has been instrumental in filling the void, helping to keep Denver’s head above water until the superstar returns.
Watson, a 23-year-old from UCLA, originally drafted with the No. 30 pick by Oklahoma City in 2022, has averaged 22.3 points per game in 10 games this month, which is well above his 13.9 points per game season average. He is coming off a stinker, too, going 4-of-12 from the field and 0-for-4 from behind the arc, en route to a stat line of just 11 points, four boards and three blocks in 29 minutes. He is a good bet to bounce back in a favorable matchup.
Bam Adebayo (C – MIA)
- DraftKings: $7,500
- FanDuel: $7,900
Bam Adebayo’s price tag has been rising lately, but he remains a tremendous value. He is averaging 37 fantasy points per game, and the Sacramento Kings are 30th in opponent rank. Adebayo should continue to roll up huge numbers at Golden 1 Center on Tuesday.
Adebayo has scored 22+ points in three of his past four games, although he was a dismal 1-of-13 from the field in Monday’s game at Golden State, while finishing with just four points. But, even with the stinker, he pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with three assists. He is averaging 16.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 three-pointers in 10 games this month.
NBA DFS GPP Targets
Ivica Zubac (C – LAC)
- DraftKings: $7,000
- FanDuel: $6,600
Ivica Zubac has been a huge part of the resurgence for the Clippers, who have won six in a row and 13 of their past 15 games. He is working on a streak of 11+ rebounds in each of his past three games, including double-doubles in each of the past two outings.
The Bulls are defensively-challenged, allowing 120.3 points per game to rank 26th in the NBA, while teams are scoring 47.4% from the field (20th) and 36.8% from long distance (23rd). However, threes aren’t a part of his game — he hasn’t attempted a triple all season. But, he is averaging 11.9 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in eight games this month.
Donte DiVincenzo (PG – MIN)
- DraftKings: $6,700
- FanDuel: $6,200
Sticking with the theme, you’ll want some Timberwolves in GPPs, and Donte DiVincenzo is a tremendous mid-tier priced option. He has been rolling along this season from distance, averaging at least 2.9 threes per game in each of the past three months.
Lately, DiVincenzo’s shot hasn’t been falling, which is why his DFS salary is also falling. He has averaged just 10 points per game in the past three outings — all on the road against tough teams. We’re picking on the Jazz again, and DiVincenzo should be able to get right against the defensively-challenged home team.
Jaden McDaniels (SF – MIN)
- DraftKings: $6,200
- FanDuel: $6,900
Again, no offense to Utah fans, but your team is easy to stack against. Jaden McDaniels is averaging 28.8 fantasy points per game. He is a strong play against the leaky defense of the Jazz.
McDaniels went for 23 points, five rebounds and five assists in 41 minutes at San Antonio last time out. He has scored in double digits in each of the past eight games. The Timberwolves forward is averaging 15.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, three assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks in nine games this month. He is averaging 19 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and two assists in two meetings with the Jazz this season.
NBA DFS Value Plays
Bones Hyland (PG, SG – MIN)
- DraftKings: $4,200
- FanDuel: $4,600
Bones Hyland might not reach the heights he did last Tuesday in Milwaukee, when we suggested him as a low-cost option. He exploded for 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, but he is still a strong play at this price point. He is averaging 10.8 points per game in the past five games, and he has five or more assists in three of those five outings, while totaling 10 three-pointers during that span.
Kobe Sanders (SF – LAC)
- DraftKings: $4,500
- FanDuel: $4,100
Kobe Sanders is a strong play at a low cost, as he is expected to stay in the starting lineup with Kawhi Leonard sitting due to knee irritation. The 23-year-old from Nevada has played at least 22 minutes in four straight games, hitting a total of seven three-pointers. He is averaging 10 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.8 three-pointers in the past four outings.
Simone Fontecchio (SF – MIA)
- DraftKings: $3,300
- FanDuel: $3,700
If you really want to save some bread, while going with a player in a favorable matchup who has some upside, look to Simone Fontecchio. He has scored exactly 13 points in each of his past two games, averaging 13 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two three-pointers in the past two outings. He went for 20 points, seven rebounds and four three-pointers in the first meeting with the Kings.
