Fantasy Baseball 10 Burning Questions
1. Where will Tarik Skubal be traded?
Tarik Skubal is a virtual lock to be traded next week with the Tigers falling further from contention. While the Brewers and Rays are contenders, the Dodgers are the best bet to land Skubal. They have consistently made a splash, plus they have a deep pool of prospects. Skubal would be the No. 1 starting pitcher the rest of the season if he lands with the Dodgers.
2. Where will Mason Miller be traded?
Mason Miller has been mentioned as a trade candidate, but with the Padres winning five in a row, it feels unlikely that he’s moved at this point. If a trade does happen, the likely destination is the Yankees, who have the pieces to bolster their bullpen. Whatever happens, Miller will remain the top closer in fantasy baseball.
3. Where will Freddy Peralta be traded?
Freddy Peralta has been a disaster with the Mets. They’re going to move on from him at the deadline. I’m betting that the Brewers will miss out on Tarik Skubal, causing them to pivot to a reunion with Peralta. It wouldn’t shock me to see Peralta bounce back for the rest of the season if he goes back to Milwaukee.
4. Where will Zach Neto be traded?
The Angels are one of the worst teams in baseball yet again, so there have been rumors that Zach Neto will be moved. While he’s still young, they can use him to re-stock their farm system. This team would be foolish not to try to get some assets for Neto. If he gets traded, it would likely be to the Red Sox, which would be a huge boost for his fantasy value.
5. Where will Otto Lopez be traded?
Otto Lopez is having a breakout season, so the Marlins are looking to cash in by stocking up on more prospects. If the Red Sox don’t get Zach Neto, Lopez could be a contingency plan for them. Since Curtis Mead is facing an extended absence, the Red Sox could use another bat. Lopez would be an ideal fit at Fenway Park.
6. Where will Luis Arraez be traded?
Luis Arraez has had a nice bounce-back season for the Giants. They could look to get some assets for him. He would make a lot of sense on the Rays. His profile includes a plus-plus hit tool with an elite strikeout rate, so he’d fit right in. Arraez would also be the kind of low-key move we’ve come to expect from the Rays.
7. Where will Jeff Hoffman be traded?
The Blue Jays have fallen further from contention, so they’re likely to move some pieces at the deadline. Jeff Hoffman is one of those pieces. He’s still an effective reliever who can get them a couple of prospects. The most likely landing spot would be a reunion with the Phillies. Either way, he’s not going to close, so he’s not exactly on the fantasy radar.
8. Where will Robbie Ray be traded?
Robbie Ray is one of the most likely pitchers to be dealt at the deadline. While the strikeouts have dried up, he’s still a reliable innings eater. I could see a rebuilding team that is surprisingly in playoff contention this year look to bring in Ray to bolster their rotation. This has White Sox written all over it.
9. Where will Louis Varland be traded?
Louis Varland has turned into an elite closer for the Blue Jays. However, the team has said that they have no plans to trade him. Toronto is looking to retool for next year as they try to get back in contention, as this season has been a complete outlier for them. I’d be shocked if Varland gets moved.
10. Who will emerge as a closer after the trade deadline?
My pick for a reliever who gets traded and becomes a closer is Luke Weaver. The Mets are in sell mode, so Weaver is likely to get moved. What if he lands somewhere like the Pirates? They’re on the cusp of a Wild Card spot, but not willing to break the bank. Feels like a good fit.
