Closer News & Notes

  • Bryan Baker maintains the lead in saves with 36. Riley O’Brien, Cade Smith, Mason Miller and David Bednar round out the top five as the other closers with at least 30 saves on the season.
  • Bednar has been on a tear with 14 saves so far between July and August.
  • Bednar, O’Brien, Jhoan Duran, Yoendrys Gomez and Kodai Senga lead all closers over the past week with three saves each.
  • Gomez has been one of the fastest risers for a Twins team in the Wild Card hunt in the American League.
  • Senga has seemed to emerge as the leader for saves in the Mets’ bullpen with Devin Williams on the injured list (IL).
  • Edwin Diaz was placed back on the IL, leading to Tanner Scott taking over the closer role again.
  • Jordan Romano and Ben Joyce have both taken clear control of the closer role in their respective bullpens despite being on two of the worst teams in the Majors.
  • Daniel Palencia returned from the IL on Friday. He pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning. It is possible he eventually settles back into the closer role.
