Kevin Alcantara expected to open as Cubs No. 2 center fielder

by Bruno Mulé | Cubs Correspondent | Wed, Feb 19th 10:51am EST

Kevin Alcantara is expected to begin the season as the Cubs' primary backup in center field behind Pete Crow-Armstrong, per MLB Pipeline. While Crow-Armstrong is slated for everyday duties, Alcantara could step in if he struggles or suffers an injury. The 22-year-old prospect is ranked No. 6 in the Cubs' system and 65th overall in baseball.

Fantasy Impact:

Alcantara made his MLB debut last season, collecting one hit in three games. However, he showed promise in the minors, posting a .292/.378/.469 slash line at Triple-A after a solid stint in Double-A. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should monitor his spring training performance, as a strong showing could make him a viable stash candidate in NL-only formats.
