Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Thursday that Lucas Giolito (hamstring) will start the season on the 15-day injured list, per Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe. (Julian McWilliams)
Fantasy Impact:
Giolito’s status for Opening Day was already in doubt after he exited Tuesday’s Grapefruit League outing with a hamstring strain, and now Boston is taking a cautious approach. Though the injury isn’t expected to be a long-term issue, the timing leaves him without enough runway to build up for the start of the season. With Giolito sidelined, Boston’s rotation depth will be tested early, especially with Brayan Bello (shoulder) and Kutter Crawford (knee) also unavailable. That could open the door for Quinn Priester or Richard Fitts to claim a temporary starting role. While the Red Sox would prefer to have Giolito ready from the jump, ensuring he’s fully healthy before making his season debut is the priority.
