Chas McCormick has signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs. The contract includes an invitation to spring training.
Fantasy Impact
McCormick, a 21st-round pick out of Division II Millersville University in 2017, spent his entire career in the Astros organization. The outfielder had three solid seasons in Houston to begin his career before suffering through two down years in 2024 and 2025. McCormick's 2023 season was especially good as he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 19 stolen bases in 115 games. With the loss of Kyle Tucker, McCormick will have an opportunity to break camp as the Cubs' fourth outfielder with a good spring.
Chas McCormick elected to become a free agent on Thursday after passing through waivers unclaimed. The Houston Astros had removed the outfielder from their 40-man roster on Tuesday. McCormick was eligible to elect free agency because he has more than three years of major-league service time.
Fantasy Impact
After slashing .259/.336/.449 during his first three seasons with the Astros, McCormick's production has declined over the last two years, in which he has hit .211/.273/.301. He may have to settle for a minor-league contract this winter.
The Astros designated OF Chas McCormick for assignment.
Fantasy Impact
McCormick was one of five players DFA'd by Houston. He could draw some interest on waivers.
The Astros optioned OF Chas McCormick to Triple-A Sugar Land.
Fantasy Impact
McCormick will return to the minors where he should see more of an opportunity.
Chas McCormick (oblique) has been reinstated from the 10-day IL.
Fantasy Impact
McCormick has been out since the end of May, but he's ready to return to the Astros' lineup after finishing a minor-league rehab assignment. With Yordan Alvarez, Jake Meyers, and others on the IL, the Astros could certainly use a rejuvenated McCormick.
