Birdsong has been seeking multiple medical opinions on his injured UCL, but will ultimately undergo Tommy John surgery. He will miss the entire 2026 season and a good chunk of the 2027 season as a result.

Birdsong has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 right forearm strain and recently sought a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister, weighing whether to undergo surgery or pursue rest and rehab. Extended time missed is expected either way, though a UCL and/or flexor tendon procedure would likely keep him out through at least the middle of the 2027 season.

After an initial MRI, the hard-throwing righty will seek a second opinion and is hopeful to only miss a few weeks. It's been a tough spring for the 24-year-old, who has yielded eight earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings of work.
