Eligibility
Keegan Thompson has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson has had an up and down start to the season out of the Cubs' bullpen but will be sent down after allowing three runs without recording an out Wednesday. He will likely stay in the bullpen in the minors and hopefully be back up before too long.
Keegan Thompson is currently not seen as part of the Cubs' starting rotation. He will primarily pitch out of the bullpen.
Fantasy Impact
This may seem like negative news at first, but Thompson was fantastic as a reliever in 2022. In 36.2 innings in the bullpen, he allowed 6 earned runs and had a 42/14 K/BB ratio. He may see a spot start here and there and should still be able to pitch with longevity, but he will ultimately focus on being a reliever going forward.
Keegan Thompson pitched three innings, allowing one hit, two walks, and no runs Thursday. He struck out three Phillies and earned his first save of the season.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson has worked in a bulk relief role since returning from the IL. The 27-year-old has a 3.69 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, .242 BAA, and a 8.25 K/9 ratio. With Thompson working in bulk relief, he should not be in fantasy lineups.
Keegan Thompson pitched three innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and no earned runs Wednesday. He struck out six Marlins and tallied his 10th win of the season.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson was just activated of the IL and the Cubs plan on using him out of the bullpen. The 27-year-old has a 3.86 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, .249 BAA, and a 8.13 K/9 ratio in 26 games this season.
Keegan Thompson (back) is expected to be activated from the IL in the next couple of days. He will be used out of the bullpen.
Fantasy Impact
David Ross also added that they are still planning out the Cubs' rotation for the final 2+ weeks of the season, so it is possible that Thompson gets another start. Still, the plan for Thompson's first outing back is to be out of the bullpen. He has been solid in 2022 both in long relief and as a starter with a 3.97 ERA, 4.55 FIP, and 91/37 K/BB in 104.1 innings.
