Keegan Thompson has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds. The move opens a spot on the 40-man roster to make room for outfielder JJ Bleday, who signed earlier Saturday. (Mike Petraglia on X)
Fantasy Impact:
Thompson, who will turn 31 at the beginning of the season, has not pitched at the major league level since 2024. The righthander pitched for the Cubs from 2021-24 and had some success as both a starter and a reliever. He won 10 games for the Cubs in 2022 and has posted a career ERA of 3.64 in 227.1 career innings. His walk rate of 11.3% and home run rate of 3.1% have hurt him in the past, but he has allowed opponents to hit just .224 and has a strikeout rate of 23.0%, including a career-high 28.3% in 2024. Teams in need of bullpen help could do worse than Thompson and would only have to absorb $1.3 million.
