Paul Sewald
RP - SEA
2023 Outlook
Roster %
Eligibility
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald should be ready for the opening of spring training following offseason elbow and heel procedures.
Fantasy Impact
The elbow and heel procedures were only minor and all signs point toward a healthy spring for the right-hander. Sewald enjoyed a fine 2022 season that included a 2.67 ERA and 29.8% K% along with 20 saves across 65 appearances. He should collect more saves in 2023 but will see competition from Andres Munoz -- also recovering from an injury -- for closing duties.
Paul Sewald had a procedure on his heel and a clean-up on his right elbow.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald is expected to be fully healthy by Spring Training, but it is an interesting development. It is possible he was pitching through some pain last year, which makes his 2.67 ERA and 0.77 WHIP even more impressive. While many are chasing saves with Andres Munoz, I expect Sewald still to see a decent share of the closer role.
Paul Sewald allowed two runs on two hits across one inning Thursday against the Rangers to go along with one strikeout and one walk.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald entered the seventh inning with the Mariners leading 7-4. That lead was cut to one run after Marcus Semien and Nathaniel Lowe launched back-to-back home runs. The Rangers ended up tying the game in the eighth inning off Andres Munoz, but the Mariners were able to earn the win in extra innings.
Paul Sewald earned the save Wednesday against the Rangers, tossing a quick 1-2-3 inning.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald needed just five pitches to earn his 20th save on the season. The Mariners magic number is down to three to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2001.
Paul Sewald earned the win Saturday against the Royals, allowing one hit across two shutout innings.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald entered a 5-5 game in the seventh inning. After a 1-2-3 frame where he threw eight pitches, Sewald was sent back out for another frame where he worked around a Vinnie Pasquantino single who has thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
