Paul Sewald was charged with three runs in two-thirds of an inning on Wednesday, suffering the loss and his first blown save of the year in a 6-5 setback to the Rangers.
Fantasy Impact
After Arizona scored three in the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 lead, Sewald was called upon to preserve the score. He retired two of the first three batters before allowing an RBI double, a walk, and a game-tying single to Jake Burger which ended his night. Juan Morillo threw one pitch in relief and Danny Jansen hit a walk-off single to stun Arizona. It was Sewald's first blown save in 10 chances this season and, up until Wednesday, he was nearly perfect in those opportunities, allowing only two baserunners in nine innings. Sewald is now 0-4 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 appearances this season. The veteran righthander should remain Arizona's closer, but his grip on the role got much looser after Wednesday's performance. Morillo and his 1.93 ERA would likely be the next man up if a switch is made.
Paul Sewald pitched around a hit batter in the ninth inning on Monday to earn his ninth save in nine chances this season. Arizona defeated Texas, 1-0.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald plunked Corey Seager with two outs in the ninth inning, but got Josh Jung to fly out to center for his ninth save of the season. The righthander ranks third in the National League in saves, trailing only San Diego's Mason Miller (12) and St. Louis' Riley O'Brien (11). Sewald has been nearly flawless in his nine save opportunities, allowing only two baserunners (one hit, one hit batter) while striking out 13 in nine innings. Overall, he is 0-3 with a 3.07 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP in 17 appearances.
Paul Sewald pitched a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts on Saturday as the Diamondbacks defeated the Mets, 2-1.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald nailed down his eighth save of the year on Saturday, putting him third in the National League in that category. It was his first save, however, since April 17. The righthander is a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities, allowing just one hit with a 12:0 K:BB ratio in eight scoreless innings. On the flip side, in eight non-save appearances, Sewald is 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA and has allowed three home runs in 5.2 innings. Overall, he has a 3.29 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP in 16 appearances covering 13.2 innings this season.
Paul Sewald allowed a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning on Thursday as the Diamondbacks dropped a 4-1 decision to the White Sox.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald dropped to 0-3 on the season after recording only two outs while allowing three runs on two walks and a three-run homer to Andrew Benintendi in the ninth. Sewald, however, came in to preserve a 1-1 tie in the ninth so it was not a save situation. He is 7-for-7 in save opportunities and, in those outings, has allowed only one hit and no walks, while striking out 10, in seven scoreless innings. However, in five non-save appearances, Sewald is 0-3 with a 15.00 ERA and has allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits - including three home runs - and a 2:3 K:BB ratio in three innings. It would be a tough decision to remove Sewald from the closer's role when he has been nearly flawless in closing out wins, but keep an eye on this situation. Jonathan Loaisiga and Juan Morillo would battle for next man up if the Diamondbacks decide to make a change.
Paul Sewald pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout as the Diamondbacks took care of the Blue Jays, 6-3, on Friday.
Fantasy Impact
Sewald needed only 10 pitches on Friday to take over sole possession of the major league lead with his seventh save of the year. The righthander is a perfect 7-for-7 in save opportunities this season, though he did suffer a pair of losses in non-save situations earlier this month. He has not allowed an earned run in nine of his ten outings and has been perfect in each of his last three appearances. Sewald has a 2.16 ERA and a 0.48 WHIP with an 11:0 K:BB ratio in 8.1 innings this season.
