Sewald was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Monday, and he has now landed with Toronto. The right-hander has a 6.32 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 39 innings this season and will look to turn things around with a Blue Jays team that currently sits last in the AL East.

Sewald was pretty solid in the closer role for the Diamondbacks over the first three months of the season. However, things started to turn south on him in late June. By the end of July, the 36-year-old righty had been removed from the role altogether. Sewald has been knocked around for 12 runs (11 earned) and given up five homers in just five innings pitched since the All-Star break. It wouldn't be surprised to see another club take a chance on the veteran, but Arizona has chosen to move on from him.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that Paul Sewald is out of the closer’s role, “at least for now.”
