Paul Sewald was charged with three runs in two-thirds of an inning on Wednesday, suffering the loss and his first blown save of the year in a 6-5 setback to the Rangers.

After Arizona scored three in the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 lead, Sewald was called upon to preserve the score. He retired two of the first three batters before allowing an RBI double, a walk, and a game-tying single to Jake Burger which ended his night. Juan Morillo threw one pitch in relief and Danny Jansen hit a walk-off single to stun Arizona. It was Sewald's first blown save in 10 chances this season and, up until Wednesday, he was nearly perfect in those opportunities, allowing only two baserunners in nine innings. Sewald is now 0-4 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 appearances this season. The veteran righthander should remain Arizona's closer, but his grip on the role got much looser after Wednesday's performance. Morillo and his 1.93 ERA would likely be the next man up if a switch is made.

The righthander ranks third in the National League in saves, trailing only San Diego's Mason Miller (12) and St. Louis' Riley O'Brien (11). Sewald has been nearly flawless in his nine save opportunities, allowing only two baserunners (one hit, one hit batter) while striking out 13 in nine innings. Overall, he is 0-3 with a 3.07 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP in 17 appearances.

Sewald, however, came in to preserve a 1-1 tie in the ninth so it was not a save situation. He is 7-for-7 in save opportunities and, in those outings, has allowed only one hit and no walks, while striking out 10, in seven scoreless innings. However, in five non-save appearances, Sewald is 0-3 with a 15.00 ERA and has allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits - including three home runs - and a 2:3 K:BB ratio in three innings. It would be a tough decision to remove Sewald from the closer's role when he has been nearly flawless in closing out wins, but keep an eye on this situation. Jonathan Loaisiga and Juan Morillo would battle for next man up if the Diamondbacks decide to make a change.
