Trevor Williams hammered in return Wednesday

Trevor Williams allowed seven runs on nine hits over five innings in the Pirates' 8-7 win over the Tigers on Wednesday. He walked none and struck out seven in the no-decision.

Fantasy Impact

Williams had a rather unwelcome return after spending a month on the injured list. Usually, pitchers are afforded a little leeway after coming off the IL, so owners shouldn't be too discouraged with this awful start. He now has a 4.12 ERA and 4.34 SIERA on the year. Williams' next start comes Tuesday at Houston.

Trevor Williams to return from IL Wednesday

Right-hander Trevor Williams will come back from the injured list to start for the Pirates on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Impact

Williams has been on the IL since mid-May with a right side strain. Williams —a decent fantasy spot-start candidate against weaker lineups like Detroit — is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA and 42 strikeouts through 54.0 innings this season. His returned will be a welcomed boost to a Pirates rotation that's been dinged up all season.

Trevor Williams has injury-shortened outing Thursday

Trevor Williams (side) lasted just 3.2 innings in the Pirates' 4-3 loss to the Padres on Thursday. He allowed one run on two hits with walking one and striking out five.

Fantasy Impact

Williams left early with right side discomfort, and it sounds like this could result in an IL stint. That's rough news for fantasy owners and the Pirates, as Williams owned a 3.33 ERA in seven starts this season. We'll know more about the injury when MRI results are released.

Trevor Williams allows one run in win Friday

Trevor Williams allowed one run on nine hits over seven innings in the Pirates' 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Friday. He walked one and struck out five while improving to 2-1.

Fantasy Impact

Williams bounced back after two lackluster starters prior to this one, and now has a 3.40 ERA and 3.14 FIP on the year. His 5.7% HR/FB rate should rise towards league average, but it doesn't necessarily have to regress Williams all the way to his 4.32 xFIP. He's nearly halved his walk rate this season down to 4.3%, and his increased his swinging strike rate to 10.1%. Williams will never be an ace, but he's a reliable back-end piece. His next start comes Wednesday at Arizona.

Trevor Williams allows four runs in no decision Saturday

Trevor Williams allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings in the Pirates' 6-4 win over the Athletics on Saturday. He walked one and struck out five in the no decision.

Fantasy Impact

Unfortunately, this is what can happen when a pitcher allows as much contact as Williams does. It was bound to catch up with him eventually, and it did in a big way with eight hits allowed. This start wasn't so bad all things considered, and it was nice to see Williams go six innings again, since he's gone at least six in every start this year. He's low dominance, and therefore low upside, but Williams could be a nice source of quality starts thanks to his longevity. His next start comes Thursday at St. Louis.
