Let's not forget how awesome Stripling was to start the season. He posted a 2.39 ERA with an MLB-high 11.38 BB/K ratio before the All-Star break. Despite finishing with a 3.02 ERA, he underperformed a .266 xwOBA that finished ninth among all starters. A potential top-25 starter if provided a secure job, he's starting the season in the Dodgers' rotation because of injuries to Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill. Even if he deals with another bullpen detour or a phantom trip to the injury list, Stripling should post excellent numbers across 140-160 innings.

Stripling had a big breakthrough in 2018, as exemplified by his terrific 6.18 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He made 21 starts and also pitched out of the bullpen, excelling in both roles. Stripling may not have a rotation spot all season, but with the way the Dodgers handle their injury-prone starters, he's likely to make plenty of starts even if he does also pitch some out of the bullpen. He would also be useful in long relief in formats where non-closing relievers have value.

Stripling may have faded toward the end of the season, but his start to the season was so absurd that he still managed to finish top five in xFIP among all starting pitchers with at least 120 innings. Stripling is like Mike Clevinger this time last year in that his dominant sample size is large enough to assume he can be a top 30 starting pitcher with a full season worth of work.
