Rumor: Randall Cobb to test free agency
by Brad Behrens | Fri, Feb 27th 9:10am EST
The Green Bay Packers are prepared to let Randall Cobb test the free agent market, according to several sources, and focus on signing key free agents OT Bryan Bulaga and DT Letroy Guion. The Packers feel that Cobb’s market is “likely to get out of hand†with Jacksonville and Oakland prepared to pay top dollar for a high-end pass catcher in free agency. Cobb and his camp are seeking a deal worth an average of $9 million per year and, while a deal in that range is below what fellow WR Jordy Nelson received last off-season, that price tag exceeds the going rate for a slot receiver like Cobb. Fantasy Impact:
The Packers have more than enough cap space to sign several of their free agents, especially after the release of LBs A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones, but GM Ted Thompson has typically been frugal with free agents seeking salaries above market value. If the Packers do let Cobb hit the market, Thompson may look towards the draft (or for a cheaper free agent) to fill Cobb’s slot role in 2015. As for Cobb, he had his best season as a pro in 2014 (91 receptions, 1287 yards, 12 TD) and it will be interesting to see if those numbers change if he ends up catching passes from Derek Carr or Blake Bortles. All of these questions will be answered by March 7, the beginning of free agency's legal tampering period.
