ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Patriots are officially re-signing RB James White to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN had reported earlier today that the deal would become official and now it has. White should return to his usual passing game role in New England. It's fair to wonder how much fantasy upside he has with Cam Newton at quarterback, though. Damien Harris and Sony Michel should continue splitting the load on early downs, which means White is only a factor in deep PPR formats entering the summer.
Free agent RB James White is expected to re-sign with the New England Patriots, per sources. He has not officially signed yet, but is expected to soon.
White was reportedly drawing interest from a couple teams, including the Buccaneers, but is expected to re-sign with the Patriots in the end. Terms of the deal aren’t yet known, but White will be returning for his 8th season in New England. His target share took a hit last season with Cam Newton at the controls rather than Tom Brady. He saw just 62 targets compared to 95 and 123 targets the previous two seasons respectively. Consider White just a low-end flex play for 2021 in PPR leagues.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that several teams are interested in former Patriots RB James White, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
There's an obvious Tom Brady connection here, but it remains to be seen how Tampa Bay is going to approach the running back position this offseason. Leonard Fournette is also a free agent. New England has been signing everyone it seems, but they might be on the verge of losing one of their own with White.
James White caught 4-of-7 targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots' 28-14 Week 17 win over the Jets.
The receiving score was his first of the season. This was arguably White's worst offensive campaign since he became a meaningful contributor in New England back in 2015. Of course, this was largely due to the Patriots' passing attack being broken for most of the year. White will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. He could maintain PPR-specific fantasy value depending on landing spot.
James White rushed four times for 14 yards and caught three passes for 23 yards in Monday night's loss to the Bills.
Outside of a two TD game in Week 12, White has had a season to forget. He can't be started with any confidence in standard-scoring formats and is an RB4 in half and full PPR moving forward.
