Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 17
J.T. Realmuto has been an unexpected contributor at the catcher position

J.T. Realmuto has been an unexpected contributor at the catcher position

Some players readily available on the waiver wire can help fantasy owners make a push over the final two months of the season.

Ownership numbers are in ESPN Leagues as of Saturday.

J.T. Realmuto – C – Miami Marlins – 17.2 percent

Catching help isn’t easy to come by at this point, which makes Realmuto worth a look to see if he can sustain his recent hot streak. Realmuto wasn’t anywhere near the fantasy radar to begin the season, as he was expected to be the backup catcher behind Jarrod Saltalamacchia. After Saltalamacchia was let go, Realmuto was given the chance to take over starting duties and promptly struggled in April and May.

But things have gotten much better over the past two months for Realmuto. He posted a wRC+ of 115 in both June and July, producing enough to start on a lot of fantasy teams. In particular, Realmuto has been destroying lefties, posting a 144 wRC+ for the season. Realmuto doesn’t strike out much, has a little bit of pop and can even offer some steals, a rare commodity for a catcher.

David Peralta – OF – Arizona Diamondbacks – 26.5 percent

With all of Arizona’s young talent, Peralta has been overlooked in most fantasy leagues. But he continues to produce, posting a .282/.352/.496 line in 320 plate appearances. The biggest improvement for Peralta is a 9.2 percent walk rate that is doubled from his rookie season. That has added a solid on-base percentage to some good power, as Peralta has nine home runs and an NL-leading eight triples.

Watching Peralta’s matchups will be key, as he has been considerably better against right-handed pitching. Still, he’s at 668 career plate appearances with a 119 wRC+ and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Tom Koehler – SP – Miami Marlins – 17.5 percent

At this point in the season, a mid-rotation innings-eater can do wonders for a fantasy team. Koehler provides exactly that and has continued to improve every year in the majors. Koehler has piled up 117 innings in 19 starts with a strong 3.38 ERA. A 4.26 xFIP inidcates that may come up a bit – Koehler’s K/BB ratio isn’t exactly inspiring – but he’s generally good for a solid six or seven innings every start.

Before a hiccup against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, Koehler had a streak of six straight starts while pitching at least six innings and allowing two runs or fewer. Koehler won’t save a fantasy team, but he can be valuable as a spot starter.

Brett Anderson – SP – Los Angeles Dodgers – 20.3 percent

Even with some deadline additions, Anderson has pitched well enough to keep his spot in the Dodgers’ rotation and even deserves a look from fantasy owners. The problem for Anderson has never been his ability. In 101 career starts, Anderson has a 3.65 ERA with a HR/9 mark of 0.75.

Instead, Anderson’s health has let him down throughout his career. Anderson has already pitched his most innings since 2009 and is finally showing what he can do over a full season. Anderson has a 3.14 ERA (3.65 FIP) in 20 starts with K-BB of 10.4 percent. While he’s not a huge strikeout pitcher, Anderson’s league-leading groundball rate of 66.4 percent helps him avoid major damage.
