Griff Whalen signs with the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens signed veteran wide receiver Griff Whalen on Friday. This will be Whalen's fifth team since he joined the NFL after signing as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2012. He also spent time with the Miami Dolphins, the San Diego Chargers and the New England Patriots in 2016. Whalen only played eight games in 2016 for the Chargers recording two receptions for 22 yards.

Fantasy Impact

Whalen played 41 games (three starts) over three seasons and recorded 47 catches for 509 yards and three touchdowns (NFL). The Ravens are deep with starting WRs: Breshad Perriman, Mike Wallace, Jeremy Maclin and Chris Moore. Whalen could be used as a returner, where he has averaged 8.2 yards per punt return and 24.2 yards per kick return.

Griff Whalen sees single target in Week 10 loss to Miami

With Travis Benjamin sitting out due to injury, Griff Whalen was forced into action as the third receiver for the Chargers in Week 10. He worked out of the slot and saw just one target. He finished the day with one catch for 10 total yards.

Fantasy Impact

Whalen is purely a depth name that is not worth monitoring in season-long formats. He is off the fantasy radar.

Griff Whalen joins the Dolphins

The Dolphins have signed former Colts receiver Griff Whalen. He has spent the last three seasons with the Colts. Whalen played on special teams as well, returning 46 punts (8.2 YPR avg) and 25 kicks (25.8 YPR avg) while there.

Fantasy Impact

This was a move for depth. However, Whalen is a punt/kickoff returner which may lead the Dolphins to use him in that role to help spell Jarvis Landry. This would diminish some of Landry's fantasy value in leagues that reward owners for individual player return yards and scoring.

Griff Whalen catches two passes in Week 11 win

Whalen caught two-of-three targets for 20 yards in the Colts' Week 11 win over the Falcons.

Fantasy Impact

Whalen returned back into fantasy irrelevance after Week 9's outburst. He is fourth or fifth in the receiving pecking order, miles away from being added.

Griff Whalen catches five passes in Week 9 win

Whalen caught 5-of-6 targets for 73 yards Week 9 against the Broncos.

Fantasy Impact

Whalen was targeted over Andre Johnson and Donte Moncrief on a night which Andrew Luck looked decisive and on point. Over the last two weeks, Whalen is second on the team with 11 targets after hardly seeing much action the first couple weeks of the season. It seems he is playing his way into a rotation as the third option behind Hilton and Moncrief. However, he should not be added as the Colts are going into their bye week.
