Bobby Sylvester’s 2019 Shortstop Rankings

Shortstop is top-heavy this year with potentially six players who will be drafted in the first two rounds. Not only that, but there is so much depth at the position that you could make a case for using Manny Machado or Jose Ramirez at third base instead of “wasting them” at shortstop. I never thought I’d write those words, but here we are in 2019 with 17 shortstops I’d trust to contribute for my fantasy team. Today, I’ll tell you about my two favorite targets on the way to my full rankings.

Adalberto Mondesi (KC): 4th Round Target
I’ve been getting Mondesi everywhere. Like quite literally every single team I’ve been drafting. Sure, there is a chance he bats .230 and gets sent back to the minor leagues like Jonathan Villar did in 2017, but there is also a chance Mondesi is the single best player in fantasy baseball. Think that’s absurd? Consider that from July 1st on, Mondesi’s pace of 33 homers, 74 steals, 102 runs, 84 RBIs and a .288 batting average made him the #1 fantasy player for a three-month sample size. Yeah, you are going to want to reach for this guy.

Paul DeJong (STL): 15th Round Target
DeJong is a little boring, but he may be the safest value in all of fantasy baseball this year. At FantasyPros, we build consensus projections from models all around the industry. The crowd is almost always more accurate than any individual source. The consensus around the industry is that DeJong is nearly as valuable as Carlos Correa and Corey Seager despite having an ADP 100 spots lower. The fact of the matter is that DeJong has more homers per game than Correa and Javier Baez since joining the league. Now DeJong won’t steal bases like Baez, nor will he post a .280 batting average like Correa, but batting fourth in the stacked Cardinals’ lineup could afford him 100 RBIs.
